Cold, cold, cold … Council races set, debate team heads to state, Lady Kats advance to the second round in UIL basketball playoffs while Cats are fighting for a playoff berth. This and more.

ITEM – via City of Kennedale … ERCOT, the state’s electric grid manager, expects a high demand event to occur in the coming days due to the extreme cold weather throughout the state. Of particular concern are the morning hours of Monday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 16, from 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. If it is possible to limit electric usage that is not related to heating your home during this period, it could prove beneficial to the statewide grid. ITEM – The Kennedale City Council has an election coming up this Spring (May 1, 2021) and declaring for Council: Place 1 – Josh Altom (incumbent – 2019) and Jan Joplin. Place 3 – Chris Pugh and Julie Jacobson. Place 5 – Chad Wandel (incumbent – 2019), James Connor and Stacy Golden.

ITEM – According to a recent Star-Telegram article, Kennedale officials are counting on the new apartment complex going up along Sublett Road near the downtown area to help support local businesses. As previously reported the Hammack Creek Apartments will be a 112 unit complex and classified as affordable housing. It is a $24 million investment. Construction is expected to last through January 2022 and create 150 construction jobs.

“The development of quality affordable National Green Building Standard-certified housing will serve as a catalyst for investment along the Parkway and in the core of the city,” Kennedale City Manager George Campbell said in a press release.

Zachary Blakemore, KHS Sophomore and Wildcat Baseball player, is also known as “Cowboy Zack.”

Besides being a student at KHS, he is the owner of several “Buckles” after going 8 minutes with a number of bulls in places like Abilene, Cleburne, and Dallas to name a few.

ITEM – via Kennedale High SchoolCongratulations to the KHS Lady Kats, who are the UIL 2021 Class 4A Bi-District Champions after defeating Aubrey Friday 58-50. The Lady Kats will advance to the Area Playoffs. The Lady Kats clinched the 2021 District 10-4A title this past week after going undefeated in district play this year.

ITEM – via Kennedale High School under the category of “Better Late, Than Never” … Last Spring, KISD student Grace Pettitt, who is now a 9th Grader at KHS, won a $2000 scholarship from the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation. Because of COVID-19, the BBYF did not hold its annual ceremony, Grace was never publicly recognized. To win the scholarship, Grace entered the annual Bobby Bragan Essay Contest.

Translation – KHS Senior Brianna Brand has signed with Houston Baptist University Track and Field. So far this year, she has recorded a long jump of 11’18.5”.

ITEM – via Kennedale Wildcat BasketballWildcats win 75-58 over Ranchview to tie for 2nd place! Tie breaker tomorrow at 7 pm at Summit International! (Unfortunately due to COVID protocols, no fans will be allowed to attend).

Kennedale is battling for 2nd place in District 10/4A and for a playoff spot. The Cats lost last week to Ranchview in their first match-up.

ITEM – via Kennedale ISD … Congratulations to our District Championship CX Debate Team who will compete at state in March! From KHS … KHS fielded two teams in this year’s contest. The duo of Sawyer Rabalais (11th Grade) and Merveille Bajika (9th Grade) won 1st Place and qualified for the UIL 2021 State CX Debate Championships (virtual) in March. The duo of Sydnie Anguiano (9th Grade) and Scout Harbster (9th Grade) came in 2nd Place and will be the State alternate.
