Another week, another runaway victory by the Kennedale Wildcats who are now 4-0. In any other year, this might be major news, not this time.
A quick look at District 6-4A …
Is Kennedale that good or the opponents that bad? More of the latter than former. In other words, Kennedale started district play without strong teams as opponents and that is the kindest thing you can say. Fort Worth ISD teams are better known for soccer, baseball and basketball, depending on the school.
Kennedale is now entering their third year playing predominately Fort Worth ISD teams in district play. The Wildcats have yet to lose a district game during this time period. (Note: Kennedale has not lost a district game since the 2011 season when the Wildcats finished in 3rd place and lost two district games.)
The newest addition to Fort Worth high schools is Benbrook. It has done well for a new program. Two years ago they finished behind Kennedale in the #2 spot. This year, the Bobcats are once again in 2nd place in district standings and are ready to challenge the Wildcats once again for a title.
Dunbar has scrappy teams that have succeeded at the 4A level where other FWISD teams have failed. Last year they were runner-ups to Kennedale. Two years ago Dunbar was third in district. Prior to that, they were just another team in Class 5A DII. In the current year despite the Kennedale blowout, Dunbar is tied for third place with Western Hills with an overall record of 3-1.
Castleberry HS which not part of FWISD but often gets lumped in with them has played Kennedale off and on over the years. It has had better teams but this year is more typical than not. Castleberry is currently 1-4. Last year the Lions finished in third place with a 7-4 season record. Beyond that, you would have to go back to the 2009 season to find a playoff qualifier.
Kennedale vs Dunbar (W) 57-0
This was more a traditional game than the Kennedale Wildcats have played in the prior two weeks. While Dunbar was being shutout, it did seem that the game was still in play until the third quarter.
Kennedale was ahead of Dunbar entering the half by 22-0 raising the possibility of some game plan changes with a new look from Dunbar after the break, but no. Kennedale sealed the game by almost doubling the score in the third quarter, going up by 42-0. The Wildcats added two more touchdowns in the 4th, all unanswered.
Kennedale led in all statistical categories including penalties (Kennedale 13-150 yards, Dunbar 8-93 yards). It was even more dominating in yards gained, 367 to 84. Kennedale passed for 121 yards with QB Jeremiah Myers (SO) connecting on 9 of 10 pass attempts and 3 TDs. RB Ife Current (SR) led all rushers with 121 yards on just 4 attempts and 3 TDS. RB Marlete Joyner (SR) added another TD and 63 yards. In receiving, Jaylen Myers (SO) led with 45 yards while three players had TD receptions – Cameron Lyles (SO), Zach Thetford (SR), and Mervyn Johnson (SO).
