This last week the Kennedale Lady Kats had to wait out the weather to play the first two rounds of UIL Texas Girls Basketball.

The first game was a bi-district game against Vernon HS originally scheduled for Monday night then Tuesday and finally played on Wednesday. Two days later on Friday, the Lady Kats had a 6 p.m. tip off against Glen Rose. {{more}}

No game is a given but when the district champion faces off against the 4th place team in another district, generally it would be a major upset if the 4th place team won. It was true on Wednesday night against Vernon but it took a while for the Lady Kats to prove it.

Kennedale won the game 90-56 but it did take the Kats a while to wake up after their bus ride to Windthorst High School. The Ladies won the half by taking the 1st quarter 18-12 and the 2nd quarter 18-10. Maybe after having their coffee, the Lady Kats played like district champs and lit up the scoreboard by scoring 40 points in the 3rd. The game was iced and Kennedale was ready to move on the area play.

Jasmyn Poe had 24 points followed by McKinley Bostad 21, Sadie Mahnesmith 19, Brenee Ellis 12, Daija Simmons 9, Kathryn Mosley 3 and Anna Llamas 2.

Friday night?s game pitted Kennedale against Glen Rose HS playing at Aledo. This promised to be a challenge to the Lady Kats. Glen Rose was co-champion with Stephenville in District 7-3A but lost a tie breaker game to earn the 2nd playoff spot.

In this game Kennedale needed to show Glen Rose why they were undefeated district champions in 6-3A and they did so quickly. The Lady Kats came out fast, outscoring the Lady Tigers 23-7 in the first quarter. Glen Rose realized that they had to slow down the faster Lady Kats. The slowdown worked to keep down the score. The 2nd quarter Kennedale won 8-5 and the 3rd quarter by a score of 12-9. But the game was still out of reach because of the 28 in the first quarter. Kennedale put an exclamation point on the outcome of game by outscoring Glen Rose 17-6 in the 4th and winning the game 60-27.

Kennedale had 4 scoring in double figures ? Bostad 16, Mahnesmith 14, Poe 13 and Simmons 11. Rounding out the scoring was Ellis with 6.

The Lady Kats now move into the Region 1 Quarterfinals. There are now 8 teams in Region 1 playing for a chance to advance to the ?Sweet 16? level in 3A girls basketball. The road to Austin just got measurably harder.

Kennedale (19-10 and 10-0) will face the Liberty Hill Lady Panthers (23-9, 9-1) at a site to be determined. Liberty Hill defeated Alvarado and Burkburnett to reach the quarterfinals.
