A mugging happened last night at Wildcat Stadium in Kennedale. It began when Juwan Washington touched the ball at 7:31 p.m. and lasted for the next two and half hours.

Witnesses, and there were many, were left surprised and amazed. It was so complete and so thorough that there was no doubt that it happened, but explaining it, was another thing.

The night itself was strange for a September in Texas. Waves of mist swirled around the field and it was cool, unusually cool. Later, weather forecasters liken it to playing in the clouds.

But it was Friday night football. Crowds came, bands played, the local city council grilled hamburgers for the hungry and two respected football teams lined up to play ball.

Although they were only a few miles apart, the Wildcats of Kennedale HS and Wildcats of Dunbar HS had never met on the field to anyone?s recollection. Both were running teams, both were 2-0 and predicted playoff contenders. It should have been a fairly evenly matched, hard fought game. No one told the Kennedale team.

Kennedale amassed 496 yards, 19 first downs on 51 rushes at 9.7 yards per carry and 76 points. Dunbar was left with 102 yards on seven first downs with 31 yards in the air and 77 yards on the ground and 7 points.
Juwan Washington 5

touchdowns vs Dunbar. Special to the

Star-Telegram/Willis Knight

It was such a complete domination of the game that it was hard to say who really was responsible.

Certainly,Kennedale RB Juwan Washington did his part. He took the opening kick-off for 97 yards and the Cats first touchdown. He would score 5 touchdowns and rush for 184 yards at 10.8 yards a carry.

But there others, quarterback Jake Michener would try only one pass but he rushed for 120 yards on just 6 carries. Ronald Hayes rushed for 115 yards, averaging 7.60 yards a pop.

The Kennedale offensive line, the “Big Cats”, big and mobile, completely controlled the line from the very beginning of the game. Kennedale never had to punt in the game.

And then there was the Kennedale ?D Cats?. They were quick, aggressive and all over the field. Dunbar didn?t get a first down until just before the half. The Wildcats from Dunbar could only muster 2.37 yards per carry.

Taylor Martin, the primary running back for Dunbar, was completely taken out of the game, gaining only 7 yards on 10 carries. He did show what he was capable of when he returned the second half opening kickoff for 85 yards and the only touchdown for Dunbar.

It was a brutal game for the fans on the other side. As the Dunbar bus left town headed up 287 and home, fans on both sides were left wondering was this just a freaky game or were the Wildcats of Kennedale that good.

Kennedale moves to 3-0 and plays Kaufman (0-3) next week at Kaufman with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
