Weekly Sports Update for Wildcat Football : Battle of district undefeated Friday night but first a look back at the Dunbar Wildcats

Tomorrow night the Wildcats (8-1, 6-0) will take on the Benbrook Bobcats (6-3, 6-0) in a showdown of the top two teams in District 6/4A, both undefeated in district play. It is also the final game of the regular season. The playoffs begin next week.


Note: There has been a change in the schedule for this game. The new time is Friday at 7 pm at FWISD Scarborough-Handley Field (6201 Craig St, FtW, TX 76112). The stadium is located off of 820 N at Exit 30 (Lancaster Ave).

Last Friday, the Kennedale Wildcats defeated the Dunbar Wildcats handily, 38-0, in the first of two ends of the season match-ups with district powers.

Take-aways from the Dunbar win …

… Dunbar has not been shut all season and was averaging 36 points per game while allowing only 17 points.

… Dunbar came into the game averaging 333 total yards per game. The DCats finished the game with 207 total yards.

… Dunbar had 4 penetrations of Kennedale territory, once to the KN3 yard line. These threats ended twice with over-on-downs, one lost fumble, and one interception.

… Dunbar had 10 legitimate possessions minus the running out of time in the first half. Dunbar started at their 25 or less, on 8 of those 10 possessions.

… Kennedale kicker Aiden Birr (SR) had 7 touchback kicks in the game averaging 65 yds per kick, 1 punt for 57 yards that landed inside the 20. Birr was 5 for 5 on point-after-attempts and 1 for 1 on field-goal attempts (28 yards).

… Kennedale had 10 possessions in the game scoring on 6 with the others ending with fumbles twice, 1 punt, and 1 turnover on downs. (The KCats turned the ball over on downs on their last possession of the game at the Dunbar 4-yard line leading 38-0 with less than a minute in the game.)

… For the game, the KCats had 322 yards rushing with 5 touchdowns. The KCats collected another 34 yards via the pass. The lead rusher was Kenaj Washington (SR) with 135 yards (22.5 ave) and 3 TDs followed by EJ Higgins (SR) with 103 yards (10.3 ave) and 2 TDs. Washington also added 16 yards with one reception.  

… The Dunbar Wildcats had 163 yards rushing and 44 passing. The lead rusher was Jerrod Braziel with 113 yards on 20 carries followed by Murry Moore (JR) with 74 yards on 19 carries.

… Defensive leaders for Kennedale were Tyler Choice (JR) 16 tackles, 1 pass defense; Braden Waters (SR) 13 tackles, 3 for loss, 1 fumble recovery (also a 51-yard kickoff return); Poasa Utu (JR) 3 sacks, 13 tackles, 4 for loss, 4 hurries; RJ Pepper had 1 sack, 13 tackles, 1 for loss, 1 hurry.
