Local Pharmacist carrying on long West Texas family tradition

D.D. Lowe is a pharmacist at Ray’s Pharmacy in Kennedale. She has a West Texas heritage that goes way back in the drug store business.

Sunday, September 1, the Abilene Reporter-News featured her family’s business, Dean Drug, in an article. Dean Drug was a fixture in the town of Cisco for many, many years. Cisco is just east of Abilene along I-20. {{more}}

The store which closed in 1999 is selling all of its contents this Labor Day weekend. The building not only housed the pharmacy but a doctor and dentist office on the upper levels of the 3 story structure. Although, in its later years, the upper floors were used as storage.

D. D. Lowe graduated from Cisco High School, attended Cisco Jr. College and then graduated from The University of Texas at Austin. D.D.?s parents Lloyd and Betty McGrew, both pharmacists, owned their own pharmacy in Cisco, Texas. That particular pharmacy, ?Dean Drug?, was bought into by D.D.?s mother?s grandfather Thomas Dean in 1909.

She says, ?After working in my parent?s pharmacy all my life, I finally decided I loved what we did there and how we took care of the great people of Cisco and surrounding areas, so I knew that was what I wanted to do.?

Lowe is quoted in the Abilene Reporter-News “At first, I decided I wouldn’t because everybody kept asking, ‘Are you going to be the fourth generation?’ I didn’t want to be told what I was going to do,” she recalled. “But I had worked there since I was about 9 or 10 and liked how the people who came in respected my family and respected their opinions about things.”

D.D. and her husband Ed Lowe, Student Minister and Associate Pastor of Retta Baptist Church, have one son ? 2 year old Jadon, a cat named Spot and a pug named Princess.

D.D. says the pharmacy business is all about helping people, ?I especially have a soft spot for my diabetic patients since I?ve been a Type I diabetic for 35 years. God has taught and blessed me an awful lot in those years.?

She has worked for Ray?s Pharmacy since 1996. She and her family reside in Burleson, Texas. Something unique about D.D.: her middle name is Dean, her great grandfather?s last name was Dean, his daughter?s (her grandmother?s) middle name was Dean, her mother?s middle name was Dean, her dad?s father?s middle name was Dean and her dad?s middle name is Dean. And now her son?s middle name is Dean.
