Kaufman came into the game on a 10 game win streak and playing some of its best ball. Kennedale was riding high after their biggest showdown of the playoffs after beating Midlothian Heritage a week earlier 45-43.

Featured another highly rated quarterback ?

For the third game in a row, Kennedale has played a team whose top performer is their quarterback. In the Area championship with Van, it was Garrett Moseley. For the Region 2 semifinals versus Heritage, it was Landon Ledbetter. This game featured quarterback Trey Collier who was their premier player both as a passer and rusher.

Collier finished the night with a respectful 208 yards (11-20) in passing for 3 TDs and he was the team?s top rusher with 100 yards and another touchdown. Overall, the Lions had 395 yards with 208 of that through the air with one interception (halfback pass) and 187 rushing yards (3.4 yard average). Other top performers were Ceil Gasper with 144 yards in receptions and 2 touchdowns and 15 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground. Jay Gasper contributed 79 yards on the ground and 14 yards through the air.

Kennedale ran for 428 yards (12.6 yard average) and passed for just 24 (2-5). Top performers were the duo of Jaden Knowles (Sr) with 260 yards and 3 TDs and DJ Kirven (Jr) with 120 yards and 2 TDs. David Roper (Sr) contributed another 42 yards running and 16 receiving.

Cats proved unstoppable ?

Kaufman was never really able to stop Kennedale?s running game while the Cats defense but the brakes on the Lions on 6 of their first 8 possessions. These stops killed any real chance the Kaufman had to make a game of it. Overall, Kaufman scored on 4 of 13 possession while Kennedale scored on 7 of their 10 offensive possessions.

Larry Brooks (Sr) had a night to remember. As a defensive back, he led the team in tackles with 16 with 3 of those for losses. He recovered a fumble and returned it for 42 yards and a touchdown. As a return specialist, Brooks returned one punt for 47 yards for a touchdown and had a second touchdown called back on a penalty.

In fact, it was the play of the special teams that scored the first 3 of 4 touchdowns scored by Kennedale. Besides the two scored by Brooks, another was scored when an errant punt attempt by Kaufman was recovered in the end-zone by the Cats.

Referees kept busy ?

It was a very unusual game for the Cats in that two Kennedale players were actually ejected from the game. Kaufman had one ejection. Both teams combined for 18 penalties and 185 yards. Kennedale had 11 penalties with 113 yards assessed. (Kennedale averages 6 penalties per game that are of the 5 yard to 10 yard variety).
