The Kennedale Wildcats (4-4, 3-0) host the Lake Worth Bullfrogs (2-6, 2-1) this Friday night at Wildcat Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.

Despite the weakness of their overall record, the Bullfrogs are currently in 3rd place in District 6/4A. There are six teams in the district with Alvarado and Kennedale sitting atop the standings. The Wildcats would drop into a tie with Lake Worth with a Frog win.

For the Wildcats, this game is the next step toward a season-ending showdown with Alvarado, the undefeated, ranked “big dog” of District 6/4A. Kennedale cannot afford to overlook the Frogs of Lake Worth.

The Bullfrogs won last week over Castleberry 42-30. The week before the Frogs lost to Alvarado 56-7 after besting Life Waxahachie 66-20.

Lake Worth’s big catch will be on display …

This season Lake Worth has added a substantial element to its game with the hiring of Todd Peterman as head coach. Peterman is not new to Texas high school football. He has head coach experience at both 6A DeSoto and 5A White Settlement Brewer. While at DeSoto he won a state title with an undefeated 16-0 record and was offensive coordinator at 6A Duncanville the last two years as the program won back-to-back state championships.

Why Lake Worth for Peterman? According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Peterman, who has 33 years coaching football, was looking for a place close to his home. Lake Worth High School 15 minutes away.

A long history between the Cats and the Frogs …

According to Lone Star Football, Lake Worth High School is second in number of games played against Kennedale High School. A total of 28 recorded games have been played. KHS holds the edge, 17-10-1. (Note: Some years are incomplete in LSF records)

In 1974, the first recorded meeting, the Bullfrogs won 14-13. The most recent match-up was last year when Kennedale won 38-28. The year prior Lake Worth took down the Cats 10-3.

Often games were won by Kennedale with lopsided scores while others were very close. Coach Barrett, as a Wildcat assistant to Head Coach Danny Yokeley in the 80s, experienced a string of games that were settled by 7-6 scores and 6-6 tie.

Background

⦁ Lake Worth’s first recorded football season was completed a month before the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. The next two seasons were canceled due to the United States’ entry into the war.

⦁ Before establishing a high school program, Lake Worth students who wanted to continue their education could attend Fort Worth schools, just as early Kennedale high school students did.

⦁ Lake Worth football has captured at least 8 district titles plus several runner-ups over its football history.

⦁ Side note: For several years, Lake Worth ISD was known for having an underground campus. Always in the flight path of Carswell Air Base, the subsurface building offered a place to teach in relative quiet. It was later closed due to maintenance issues.

⦁ Lake Worth High School’s UIL enrollment numbers have been reported as 961 compared to Kennedale’s 1006.

Game time is 7:30 pm at Wildcat Stadium. It will be the last home game of the season.
