The COVID-19 pandemic has been disastrous for U.S. employment, but with the country partially reopened, the job market is showing signs of healing. The national unemployment rate is currently at 10.2%, which is 31% lower than the peak of 14.7% during the height of the pandemic.

In order to identify where workers have been most affected by the coronavirus pandemic, WalletHub compared 180 cities based on three key metrics. We looked at the change in each city’s unemployment rate during the latest month for which we have data (July 2020) compared to July 2019 and January 2020. We also considered each city’s overall unemployment rate.

Some cities’ jobs have weathered the storm better than others, though. Lexington-Fayette, KY tops the nation at #1. Amarillo, TX come in at #5. Texas does have the most cities in the top 50.

  • #5 Amarillo, TX;
  • #11 Plano, TX;
  • #14 Lubbock, TX;
  • #25 Garland, TX;
  • #26 Austin, TX;
  • #27 El Paso, TX;
  • #29 Fort Worth, TX;
  • #30 Grand Prairie, TX;
  • #31 Arlington, TX;
  • #32 Dallas, TX;
  • #36 Irving, TX;
