Dr. Seuss once wrote, ?The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.? Reading with your child at home promotes strong literacy skills in the classroom, widens his/her knowledge of the world and the things in it, and provides times of bonding between parent and child. Days become full with work, household chores, and errands, but make a solid attempt to read with your child daily. Here are some tips for reading with your child: {{more}}

1. Let your child choose books of interest to him/her. If your selection of books is limited at home, take a family trip to the library. This not only shows your child one of the many community resources available, but also allows him/her to select a book. Children are more likely to want to read the story if he/she had a part in choosing it.

2. Find a quiet, comfortable spot to read. Turn off the TV to eliminate any distractions.

3. As you read the book to your child, have him/her track (point to) the words. You can also choral read (read the book out loud together). Your child can also read to you. Discuss the illustrations.

4. While reading, ask your child questions about the story to build comprehension skills. Ask questions like, ?What happened after Biscuit found the cat?? and, ?Who found the lost treasure?? You can also have your child make predictions about what might happen next.

5. Revisit and reread books to build fluency. Repeated exposure to a book will increase your child?s reading speed and accuracy.

The most important tip to remember while reading with your child is to have fun and enjoy the time you are spending together. Happy reading!
