Tuesday, September 11, 2001, was a horrific day for Americans, all Americans. It was a day terrorists brought down not one but two of the tallest structures in New York almost destroyed the Pentagon in Washington DC and killed all the passengers on four hi-jacked passenger planes that were used in their planned attacks.
In all, a total of 2,977 Americans were killed with another 6,000+ injured. Added in the total fatalities for that day were 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers who had rushed in to assist victims.
The injured and dead Americans represented nearly all racial, ethnic, and economic groups. No greater attack on America has ever happened in terms of fatalities and related injuries.
President George W Bush, three days later while at “Ground Zero” in New York, said “I want you all to know that America today, America today is on bended knee, in prayer for the people whose lives were lost here, for the workers who work here, for the families who mourn. The nation stands with the good people of New York City and New Jersey and Connecticut as we mourn the loss of thousands of our citizens.”
America came together on that day.
