It’s hard to believe, but the school year is coming to a close. The seniors are preparing for graduation, and the juniors are anxious to start their last and final year of public school.?I graduated from Kennedale High school in 2006, and attended Midwestern State University for my freshmen year of college. Since then I have transferred universities twice, and spent a lot of money and time on the wrong classes. There are so many things I wish I would’ve known about senior year, and so many more things I wish I had done to get the most out of my college career. So, I thought I might see what questions the high school students might have for me. {{more}}?I was surprised at the response, and eager to answer all of them. My credibility to write answer these questions comes mostly from lessons I learned the hard way. A better title might be, ‘What Not To Do’. Nevertheless, it’s a good place to start. The more you know the better.?Dear Katie,?I’m about to be a senior and college will be here before I know it. I’m scared my grades won’t be good enough to go where I want to go, and I’m scared about tennis too. College tennis has always been a dream, but I’m scared it might just stay one. Hopefully next year I can step my game up on the court and in the classroom. Also, having a job and a girlfriend makes having time for each thing limited. Is there any advice you can give me??Sincerely, Isaac?Dear Isaac,?I admire the fact you are already thinking about college before your senior year has even begun. You are already on the right track. You CAN improve your performance next year academically and athletically if you make them a priority. I can’t tell you how much I wish I had started working towards my future before I got into college. My junior and senior year I did just enough to make decent grades, but I did not push myself. I wanted to have fun, and figured I would worry about college when I got there. BIG MISTAKE! I had no clue if I took dual-credit classes I could have 12 hours under my belt before I even stepped foot on a college campus. (you will need at least 120 hours for a 4 year degree) When I was in high school we didn’t have the option to take different career classes, but you do. Take advantage of it! If anything you will figure out what you don’t like, which is much easier (and cheaper) than figuring out what you don’t like in college. I can’t really say much about ‘not having enough time’. It seems to be the mantra the older you become. Organization and planning is the only way to keep your sanity. I urge you to practice your habits now, so when you do get to college you will already know how to manage your time. (I am 25, and still struggling with this one) If college tennis is your dream then give it your all while you still have the chance. It is completely within reach, but you have work for it. Anything worth having is going to take time and dedication, so I urge you to start working on those dreams NOW!?Sincerely, Katie???
