PORTALES, N.M. ? Eastern New Mexico University softball coach Katie Welborn didn’t have to look far to find her new assistant coach, as a matter of fact, Morgan Spearman was already in the Lone Star Conference. {{more:[Full story]}}Spearman served as a graduate assistant coach at Angelo State after completing a standout career for the Rambelles.

“I’m excited, I’m thrilled to stay inside the Lone Star Conference,” said Spearman. “Eastern is an up and coming program in the LSC. I am excited to join coach Welborn, she’s done great things this past season and I look forward to putting our knowledge together and making the program more successful in the future.”

“Morgan is going to be such a huge asset to this program,” said Welborn. “She is exactly what the Greyhounds need. She is such great contrast for me, I think she will challenge me greatly as a coach and make this whole squad better. Morgan also has an abundance of experience in this conference, accolades from her time playing that would rival most, and to top it off a humble demeanor about it all. We are so thrilled and blessed to have Morgan Spearman on this team. She is going to make being a Greyhound even more fun and exciting.”

Spearman starred for ASU from 2011-14 and was a multi-time All-American. She burst onto the scene as a freshman and paced the Rambelles with a team-best .466 on-base percentage. As a senior, Spearman batted a team-record .506, which was second in NCAA Division II. Over her playing career, Angelo State won 171 games and defeated West Texas A&M in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship in 2014. Spearman concluded her career with a team-record .522 on-base percentage, 222 runs scored, .995 fielding percentage, and 126 walks. She also was the first Angelo State player to hit for the cycle, and accomplished the feat against Midwestern State in 2014.

Last season, as an assistant coach, Spearman helped guide ASU to a 37-win season. The Rambelles belted 22 homers and led the LSC with a .972 fielding percentage.

“Playing at Angelo State under two great coaches I’ve learned a lot of things as a player and coach,” said Spearman. “I hope I can implement those things and be just as successful working with coach Welborn and the players at ENMU.”

Spearman started four seasons for Kennedale High School and was the District 12-3A Most Valuable Player as a senior. She also garnered all-state laurels in the 2010 season. Spearman was a first team all-district and TSWA selection in 2009 after guiding KHS to district and bi-district titles in the 2008 season.
