One in 200 Americans will need a bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant in their lifetime. The Kennedale Town Center will host a donor recruitment drive and fundraiser to register potential bone marrow donors on behalf of the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation on Monday, August 15, 2015, from 7 a.m. to 6 10:30 a.m. {{more}}
The drive, which will benefit patients suffering from lymphoma, leukemia and other blood cancers, and in need of a bone marrow transplant, will be held at 405 Municipal Way, Kennedale, Texas.
While many are under the impression that a sibling is the best match, a sibling will match only 30% of the time, leaving 70% of the population using a public registry to find a stranger to save their life.
All members of the community are welcome and are encouraged to participate. If you are between the ages of 18 and 45 and in general good health, you are eligible to be screened and join the worldwide registry. It consists of a simple cheek swab and is fast and painless.
There is no cost to join the registry. There is, however, a $60 lab processing fee for each kit and Gift of Life relies on the generosity of donations to help offset these costs.
