Friday night in Nacogdoches the Kennedale Wildcats dropped to 2-3 with a loss to #1 West Orange-Stark 45-21 under a blizzard of penalty flags. For the game, the officials threw 27 flags for a combined 213 yards worth of penalties. Kennedale had 17 of those penalties for 133 yards. {{more:Read more …}}
 
West Orange-Stark did live up to its #1 billing. The Mustangs racked up 480 yards in offense going 15-29 for 257 in passing and 233 yards on the ground (6.2 av). Kennedale, thanks to a strong 2nd half had 329 yards on offense. The Cats were 1-5 in passing for 6 yards but had 39 carries for 323 yards (8.3av).
 
Mustangs controlled first half …
 
The Mustangs controlled the first half, ringing up 24 points all in the 2nd quarter with 182 yards through the air (12-23 for 1 TD) and 74 yards on the ground for a total of 256 yards on 38 plays. The Cats were limited to 3 first downs for 78 yards, all on the ground. Kennedale once again was hurt by penalties with 9 for 65 yards. For the Mustangs, it was the first game this season that they had not score a point in the 1st quarter.
 
The second half was a draw with both teams scoring 21 points. The Mustangs had 224 yards while Kennedale had 251 yards. Kennedale was the first team this year to score on the Orange defense but it wasn?t much solace at the Mustangs owned the scoreboard.

On offense, topping all runners for Kennedale, was Jaden Knowles (Jr) who had 13 carries for 147 yards highlighted by a 90 yard run and 1 touchdown. QB Evan Jowers (So) had 4 carries for 65 yards that included a 48 yard touchdown run. RB De’shaun Kirven (So) had 13 carries for 72 yards with a 50 yard run that set up Kennedale?s first touchdown of the game. QB Aaron Rinehart (Sr) punched out a third touchdown on a keeper.
 
Defensively Ector Rivera (Jr) led in tackles 8 followed by Michael Landers (Sr) 7; Malik Burgess (Sr) 5; Mayfield Hayes (Jr) 5 and one FL; Baron Browning (Sr) 4, Ricardo Pena (Jr) 4 and two FL; Gjemar Daniels (Sr) 4 and two FL; and, Kade Stephenson (So) 3. Cody Gillespie (Sr) had one sack. Larry Brooks (Jr) successfully defensed 2 passes while Ector Rivera (Jr) one.
 
On special teams Kevin Tiero (Jr) was successful on 3 PAT and had 224 yards on 4 kick-offs. Cody Gillespie (Sr) punted 4 times for 150 yards (37.5 av). Jaden Knowles (Jr) had 6 return carries for 117 (19.5 av).
 
district play starts this week …
 
Kennedale starts district play next week against Springtown (4-1) which means the challenges continue for the Cats. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium. Kennedale has not dropped a district game since 2011 when they lost to Glen Rose.
