Fourth grade Delaney students made their yearly field trip to the state capital in Austin, Texas last month. {{more}}
Students learned about Texas history and government through tours of the capital building and the Bob Bullock museum.
The trip started off with an early morning bus ride, where students were engaged during the trip through a discussion about La Salle and his ship, the La Belle, playing Texas history Bingo, and also participating in a puzzle trivia game.
Once the students arrived in Austin, they immediately entered into the Capital Building for a tour. They were able to see the rooms where the Senate and the House of Representatives meet, as well as the main rotunda with portraits of the past governors of Texas.
From the capital, they traveled over a few blocks to the Bob Bullock Museum of Texas History. There, the students had three floors of Texas? rich history to look over and explore, from the Native American Indians to the importance of Texas in World War II.
One of the special exhibits they were able to visit at the museum was the La Belle ship exhibit. This was La Salle?s ship he brought over on his expedition 300 years ago from France to ride up the Mississippi river, but landed instead in Matagorda Bay, off the coast of Texas. The ship is currently being restored and will become a permanent display behind glass at the Bob Bullock museum this May. The students were able to see the restoration process and the pieces of the ship.
After visiting the exhibits at the museum, students were treated to a special appearance Q&A session by Dr. Jim Bruseth, head archeologist who directed the original excavation of the ship.
Afterwards, they boarded the bus and headed back to Kennedale, and reviewed what they had learned by playing Texas History Jeopardy.
