Wes Roberson (KHS Class of 2010), who has served as an assistant coach at both Snyder and Wichita Falls Ryder High Schools, has landed his first baseball head coaching job. He will be coaching the Leopard’s at 4A Gainesville this fall. {{more: continue ?}}Roberson was named this summer to the head job at Gainesville, replacing Garrett Thomas who stepped down at the end of the school year. While at Kennedale, he played football (quarterback) and baseball. It was at baseball that he made his biggest impact. Besides, earning his Texas All-Star honors in 2010, he set two records for Wildcat baseball, including most hits in a season (58) and back to back homeruns, both in his senior season. The Leopards went 11-13 last season and have had an almost yearly rotation of head coaches at Gainesville. Roberson told the Gainesville Daily Register’s Sports Editor, Patrick Hayslip, that he knows there will be challenges but he plans on staying.?Some of the challenges are just trying to get the team back on the winning track,? Roberson said. ?I know it?s been a while since they?ve won. We want to win games during district, not just the non-district games. All that matters is district. So that?s what we?re going to try to do is get the kids to learn how to win and get their mental game stronger, but I?m up for my challenge.??I think a lot of it is just how you build relationships, get them to trust you and for them to know that we?re going to be around for a while,? Roberson said. ?You don?t have to worry about me leaving. When you have different coach every year, they learn to trust someone and then poof, they?re gone. So, I think it?s important that they know that we?re going to be here for the seniors. You?ve got to build that trust that you?re going to be around and that if they need anything that you?re there for them.?Roberson has the support of Gainesville Athletic Director, James Polk. Polk, a former assistant to Richard Barrett in football and head track coach at Kennedale is going into his 4th year at Gainesville after moving over from Snyder in a similar position. Roberson played quarterback when Polk was offensive coordinator for the Wildcats. He also worked for Polk at Snyder High School.?Roberson and his wife Kara will both be teaching at Gainesville.? Wes is a high school math teacher and Kara is a special education teacher.Read more in the Gainesville Daily Register .?
