Game Day: Dunbar vs Kennedale

Head Coach Todd Lawson likes to have a tough early-season schedule. Dunbar?s first four games were losses but against four teams that have strong records. Their four losses this season came against 5A Dallas Kimball (5-2) 40-8; 3A Dallas Madison (6-1) 42-0; 5A FTW Eastern Hills (4-3) 8-7 and 4A Celina (5-2) 49-6.

Lawson sees that as preparation for district play. Dunbar’s two wins are over district teams. Two weeks ago, the Dunbar Wildcats overwhelmed FTW Diamond Hill-Jarvis 52-3. Last week Dunbar defeated FTW Western Hills 28-10.

Dave Campbell?s Texas Football magazine has Kennedale (4-3, 3-0) picked to win District 6/4A followed by the Dunbar Wildcats. Texas Football listed Dunbar with 13 starters returning – 7 on offense and 6 on defense. Last year the team finished 5-5 overall but 4-2 in district play. The Dunbar Cats made the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons.

• Aaron Cooper (SR) as wide-receiver had 448 yds and 8 TDs plus 378 yds rushing and 5 touchdowns. He was also a 1st team all-district last year on both offense and defense.?
• Defensive-end Jemarion Hayes (SR) with 62 tackles and 14 sacks made Defensive Player of the Year for District 6-4/A.?
• Safety LaKeithan Tarkington (SR) snagged 9 interceptions.?
• Quarterback Dorian Carr (SO) is a can-do player earning his knocks early.

Kennedale and Dunbar have played 3 times with the Wildcats from Kennedale taking all three. Last year’s game was the closes one. At halftime the score was knotted at 7 all. Kennedale scored 14 unanswered points in the 3rd and tacked on an insurance score in the 4th while Dunbar managed only a single touchdown in the second half. Kennedale won 28-13.
