It has been over 5 years since the Cats lost a district game ..

A year doesn?t go by when one or more school sports records are broken and new ones made at Kennedale High School. This year is not any different. {{more: continue …}}

Lady Kat volleyball has won outright or has shared 4 straight district titles while that may or may not be a record, they have extended their UIL bi-district playoff record to 11-0 dating back to 2007 and that is a school record.

undefeated through 3 different alignments …

Friday night, the Wildcat football team should add another to the record books. Under Head Coach Richard Barrett, the Wildcats have now won 32 straight district games and with a win against Lake Worth on Friday night that will include 6 consecutive undefeated district championships dating back to the 2012 season.

There are three records involved in all of that; first, the number of consecutive district wins; second, the number of district titles; and third, the number of undefeated district titles. This time span includes three different district alignments. While it is not a state record, it is a school record and currently one of the better ones in the DFW area. (It has to be noted that there are two area teams that really are in another galaxy in terms of undefeated district games. Both 5A Aledo and 4A rival Argyle have not lost a district game since 2007).

The last district game to get away from Kennedale was a loss to Glen Rose on October 14, 2011 by a score of 28-13. Kennedale that year finished third in district play with a record of 8-4, 3-2. There other district loss was to the Alvarado Indians (14-1, 5-) who went on to play and lose by one point in the state 3A championships which was played for the first time at the new Cowboy Stadium in Arlington.

#22 with most wins among active coaches ?

There is another record that could be made this season and it is a personal one. Coach Barrett who is in his 23rd year as a head coach is looking for career win number 200 this season. He is at 197 now. This means it will be the second round of the playoffs before he could clinched this second century mark.

Among active coaches in the state in all classification, Barrett is listed at #22 with most wins going into this season.

Playoff prospects ?

This week is the final district game for teams across the state and many will determine playoff opponents for the first rounds of playoff action.

Kennedale should see some familiar faces barring upsets. In the first round (bi-district) Kennedale will play the 4th seed from District 6/4A. Last year it was Wilmer-Hutchins, this year it looks to be Ranchview. Kennedale will be the heavy favorite. But, it gets tough quickly after that, as Van is the projected opponent in the 2nd round (area). In the third round (region) Midlothian Heritage along with Kennedale are picked to play each other.

No easy path to the state finals. Van is currently 8-1, 4-1 while Heritage is 9-0, 4-0. Both teams had their playoff runs stopped by Kennedale last year and Heritage, still the new kids on the block but loaded with talent, are looking to prove that they are #1 worthy.
