It was an entertaining game.
The Springtown Porcupines (Pojos) came to town gunning for an upset and to prove it scored in three plays on the first possession of the game. {{more}}
It was a rare position for the Wildcats being behind in a game and when the quarter ended it was 10-7 Springtown.
Kennedale (6-0, 1-0) responded with their own scores with a RB Juwan Washington run in the first period and then a pass reception by TE Chance Bishop (6-6, 295) at the start of the second period. Big Chance rumbled down field for 49 yards and the go ahead touchdown.
Springtown (3-3, 0-1) would not score again.
The Kennedale defense was tested with the scrambling ability of the Pojos? quarterbacks who made it exciting to watch. Several times the Pojos moved it down field into scoring position only to have the D-Cats drive them back up field. Springtown did manage 252 total offense, 105 by ground and 147 by air.
In the end, Kennedale had 468 yards, rushing for 380 and passing for 88. This was a little below their season average of 520 yards per game. The Wildcats made it a little more exciting than it needed to be by racking up 80 yards on 10 penalties.
Washington (Sr) led all rushers with 165 yards and 3 touchdowns giving him 1371 total yards and 24 touchdowns for the season.
The Wildcats spread the touchdowns around in this game with 1 each by Dominique Doss (Sr), Ronald Hayes (Sr), Chance Bishop (Sr) and Cody Gillespie (So). Jake Michener (Sr) went 3 for 3 and 88 yards along 39 yards rushing. Derrick Williams (Sr) who always adds a spark to Kennedale special teams, gathered up a Pojo punt fumble and darted in for another touchdown.
Zane Kottwitz (Sr) went 6 for 7 in extra points and a field goal bringing his season total to 36 points.
The game was needed by the Wildcats because it was a challenging, bruising game. The Pojos gave up yardage grudgingly, forcing the Wildcats in to 4th down situations several times and actually stopping them once. Kennedale had to grind out the yardage by driving down the field instead of the usual one or two plays and then popping one for a score. They were tested both on defense and offense.
Next up for Kennedale is Lake Worth at Lake Worth?s Kittrell Stadium, Friday October 18 with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
