Regular season win streak at 21
The AP #7 Kennedale Wildcats (1-0) had an early Halloween scare at Wildcat Stadium Friday night when the #10 Terrell Tigers (1-1) kept coming up with ways to stay in the game all the way to the final minute. {{more:Read more …}}
While the Cats dominated the stats, they couldn?t control the scoreboard. Kennedale amassed 444 yards and 27 first downs on offense to 277 yards and 10 first downs for Terrell. The Wildcats had three players with 100 plus yards. But, it was big plays that kept the Tigers in the game along with 2 fumbles and 8 penalties for 73 yards by the Cats.Game story …
Q1
Kennedale scored first on 32-yard field goal by Kevin Tiero (Jr) at 9:05 in Q1. Score 3-0 Cats. Terrell senior running back Elijah McQueen scored on an 80-yard sprint up the field. With the extra point Terrell took the lead with just about a minute left in Q1. McQueen ended up with 143 yards for the night on just 6 attempts and 1 touchdown. Score 7-3 Tigers
Q2
Kennedale responded with 16 unanswered points in Q2 with Wildcat sophomore DJ Kirven (22/118, 5.4av, 1TD) scoring on a 1-yard run at 8:43 in 2nd but the kick failed. Score 9-7 Cats. Cats junior Jaden Knowles (25/153, 6.12av, 1TD) followed with 15-yard TD and Tiero added the extra point. Score 16-7 Cats. And finally Tiero kicked a 31 yard field goal just before halftime. Tiero finished the night with two field goals and was 1-2 on extra points for a total of 7 points. Score 19-7 Cats.
Q3
Terrell Tiyea Zanders (10/73, 7.3av, 1/7pass, 8yds, 1int, 1TD) on a 48-yard run in the closing minutes of the Q3, provided the only scoring. Bryan Lara provided the kick. Score 19-14 Cats.
Q4
Kennedale starts the quarter with a 9 play drive but it is marred by 3 penalties and bogs down on the K49. A 50 yard punts pins the Tigers back on their 1 yd line. The Cats defense steps up. Trying to get out the hole, Terrell QB Zanders throws 2 incomplete passes and then on a 3rd and nine from the 1, Kennedale catches Terrell in the backfield for a safety. Score 21-14 Cats.
With a short kick, Kennedale gets excellent field position starting on their own 48 and a fresh set of downs but while moving the ball the Cats fumble the ball back to the Tigers on the T30. Terrell takes over on their 36. On the next play Zanders runs for 49 yards to the Kennedale 15. Three plays later Jermaine Gardner rushes for a 3 yard touchdown. With 1 minute left to play and down by 1, Tiger coach gambles and goes for two and the win but the Kennedale defense stops them cold. Score 21-20 Cats.
With a minute left to play and fielding the on-side kick, Kennedale takes possession at the Terrell 44. Three plays and a penalty by Terrell placing the ball on T32, time runs out on the Tigers. Final Score 21-20 Cats.
The other 100+ rusher for Kennedale was David Roper (Jr) with 12 carries for 127 (10.6av). Tyler Alphin (Sr) had 1 reception for 25 yards in the only pass of the night from Kennedale QB Aaron Rinehart (Sr).
Kennedale keeps their regular season win streak at 21 alive and their home field streak that dates back to September 27, 2013 when they lost at Wildcat Stadium to Texas High School 27-7.
Next week, Kennedale travels to Alvarado. The Alvarado Indians (1-1) are coming off a 35-32 win over Decatur. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Friday
