Kennedale upends Dunbar 58-6

It was as predicted. Dunbar?s Nakkia Cox (Sr) was all over the field (161 yds running, 115 passing) and receivers Devonte Kinney and Bryan Wilson had some really nice catches. But in the end, it was the disciplined ground machine of Kennedale that ruled the day, winning 58-6. {{more}}

For Kennedale (3-0), it took time to settle into the game but once it happened, the Wildcats of Kennedale took control with 8 touchdowns and 447 yards of offense.

In rushing, it was almost an even split between Dailyn Wells, Sr (145 yds on 14 atts, 1 TD) who had to sit out last week?s game with an ankle injury and Quardraiz Wadley, Sr (144 yds on 16 atts, 4 TD). Kennedale?s QB Kaiser McGlothen (Sr) ran for another 56 yards and passed for a 25 yard touchdown to tight-end Tyler Alphin (Jr). This is not a misprint. McGlothen and Kennedale have passed exactly twice, both for completions in 152 plays so far this season. For Kennedale, that is a balance offense.

In the game of Wildcats, Dunbar (1-2) came out pumped, wanting to avenge last year?s 76-7 blowout loss to Kennedale. The Dunbar Wildcats were able to do something rare by stopping Kennedale from scoring in the 1st quarter. But, Dunbar?s offense couldn?t put together a complete series, although they managed some big gainers.

Typical for the evening for Dunbar was their first series where Cox had a big 22 yard run that was sandwiched between two penalties, two plays for losses and one ?should have been caught? pass. Dunbar ended the game with 13 penalties for 125 yards and several were drive killers. Two were near fragrant fouls that nailed Kennedale kicker, Jace Zeller, as he was attempting extra-point kicks. Zeller never blinked and was perfect for the evening (8 for 8).

Figuring big again was the Kennedale defense. The D-Cats kept the potentially explosive offensive players for Dunbar in check by forcing 4 turnovers with 2 by interceptions, 2 by fumbles recovered by Baron Browning (Jr) and Aaron Williams (Jr) and scoring 8 points – one by touchdown on fumble in end-zone recovered by Williams and 2 points off by Malik Burgess (Jr) on a fumbled two point try by Dunbar. The defense limited Dunbar to only 245 total offensive yard. Leading tackler for Kennedale was Ector Rivera (So) with 8 followed by Williams with 6, Browning at 5 and Burgess, Devan Mason (So), Jaden Knowles (So), Gjemar Daniels (Jr) and Stephone Jackson (Jr) all with 4 each.

Game story …
  • Dunbar?s second series was again typical for their night. Taking over after Dunbar?s defense stopped Kennedale on a 4th and 2 at the Dunbar 24, the D-Wildcats managed 4 first downs and drove to the Kennedale 34. But the drive ended with a penalty, a nine yard loss and an interception at the Kennedale 17.
  • Kennedale exerted its control in the game with their second series that carried over into the 2nd quarter. Starting on their 17, Kennedale drove down field in a seven play drive with short bursts by Wadley and McGlothen capped by a 51 touchdown run by Wells. The extra point was good and Kennedale took the lead with one minute into the second quarter, 7-0.
  • Kennedale scored again two plays later when Dunbar, who had been penalized on the issuing kickoff, took possession at their 13. Cox, forced back into the end-zone by the surging Kennedale defense, fumbled and Williams for Kennedale recovered for the K-Cats? second touchdown of the evening. The extra point was good and it was 14-0 Kennedale.
  • Two plays later with Dunbar at their 40, a scrambling Cox threw his second interception of the game which Kennedale returned to the Dunbar 28. Four plays later after Wells and McGlothen had swapped runs, Wadley went 14 yards for his 1st touchdown of the game. Extra point was good, 21-0 Kennedale.
  • Dunbar, after a 26 yard return by Kinney and trying to stay in the game, put together an 8-play drive that ended on a 4th and 2 at the Kennedale 20 with an incomplete pass. Kennedale took over and in a clock controlling 12-play drive, marched 80 yards for a scored on a 1 yard touchdown run by Wadley. Extra point was good and it was 28-0 Kennedale.
  • With 30 seconds left in the half, Dunbar did manage to work the ball in four plays down to the Kennedale 17 when time expired.
  • In the third quarter, Kennedale almost matched the 2nd quarter point total with 21 unanswered points. Wadley scored first in the quarter on Kennedale first possession of the half on a 61 yard run up the middle. With the extra point, the score was 35-0 Kennedale.
  • Dunbar went four and out and was forced to punt on 4th and 17 at the D18.
  • Kennedale scored again 3 plays later when QB McGlothen surprised fans with a toss to TE Tyler Alphin, who looked equally surprised with his the catch, ambled in for the Kennedale touchdown. The extra point is good and the score is 42-0 Kennedale.
  • Kinney gave Dunbar good field position with a 26 yard return and Cox, who ran for 14 yds and passed for 10 more, moved the Dunbar Wildcats into Kennedale territory at the 39. But after a loss and a 15 yard penalty, Cox for Dunbar was forced to punt on a 4th and 25 at the D46.
  • With a Dunbar punt that went nowhere, Kennedale started on the D45. The K-Cats covered the remaining distance, mixing runs by Wells (15 yds) and Wadley (34 yds) in a nine play drive. Wadley took it over from the 5. With another perfect extra point, it was 49-0 Kennedale.
  • On the next possession, Dunbar scored its only touchdown of the evening in an 8 play drive that was not marred by a penalty and it was almost all Cox. He had runs of 33, 9 and 39 (for the TD). Again Dunbar had trouble following through when Burgess for Kennedale scooped up a fumbled Dunbar two-point conversion attempt and took it for 80 yards and a Kennedale two points.
  • Kennedale scored one more touchdown after Browning recovered a Cox fumble on the D37. With Aaron Rhinehart (Jr) quarterbacking, Knowles took it in for a 8 yard TD after Darren Hull (Jr) had picked up 20 yard in the 6 play drive. After a quick 4 and out by Dunbar, Rhinehart and company ran out the clock for Kennedale for Kennedale?s third win of the season.

Next up for the Wildcats is a home game Friday night against the Kaufman Lions (3-0) with game time at 7:30 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
