Lady Kats Basketball remain on top in district play with 57-47 win

The Lady Kats will play 6th place Diamond Hill Jarvis next Tuesday in an away game before entertaining the 2nd place Godley Wildcats (24-6, 6-1) Friday night, February 5, in a shoot-out to settle first place. Kennedale won the first match up 58-47. The Kats will finish the regular season on the road playing 4th place Alvarado on Tuesday, February 9. All games are at 6:30 p.m.
 
Friday night, in a game that ran late because of approximately 40 fouls that were called by the refereeing crew, Kennedale took an early lead and managed to hold off the Lady Bulldogs of Venus in the first quarter that ended at 12-9. Evie Whorley (Jr) scored 6 of her 24 game points in the first quarter (half of her 24 would come later in the 4th). The clock was stopped sixteen times for fouls calls, equally shared by the teams.

In Q2, Venus took their first lead of the game at 13-12 on a free throw and a jumper. This quarter would be controlled by the whistle as Venus went to the line 6 times and converted on all but two (10/12), while Kennedale was at the line just twice, going 2-4. After exchanging the lead twice in early going, Venus took control on the strength of their foul shots and held the lead through most of the quarter. Venus biggest lead was 22-17 midway through Q2. Kennedale finished well though going on an 8-1 run, capped by a Peyton Williams (Jr) 3 pointer, just before half to take back the lead 25-23. Daiji Simmons (Jr) contributed 4 of her 7 points in this quarter.

The third quarter would be the game as Kennedale outscored Venus 17-8 and the Bulldogs never recovered. Lucy Benson (Jr) scored 8 of her 15 game points in this quarter to help the Kats on their run. The Kats went 5-8 from the line in the Q3.
 
The last quarter was all about catch-up efforts by the Lady Bulldogs and in their effort to slow down Kennedale?s top scorer, they fouled. Whorley went to the line four times, hitting 6 of 8 and then adding another 6 points from the field. Throw in 2 by Benson and 1 free throw by Simmons and that was all that was needed for Kennedale . Venus did go 7-8 from the free throw line in the 4th but never could recover from Q3 coming only within 7 points early in the 4th.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Kats travelled to Midlothian to play the Heritage Lady Jaguars (6-21, 2-5). Heritage, a brand new high school, playing only for the first year was an easy mark for the Lady Kats as they rolled the Jaguars 71-26.
 
The score by quarters: Q1 23-4; Q2 18-6; Q3 18-6; and Q4 12-10.
 
Leading the Kats in points were Evie Whorley 26, Daijia Simmons 18, Lucy Benson 11, Kylie Embry (Jr) 7, Payton Williams 5, Sydnee Biscoe 2 and Shania Roper (Jr) 2.
 
Benson led the team with 8 rebounds, 7 assist and 3 steals. Biscoe had 5 rebounds, 2 assist and 3 steals. Sydney Johnston (Jr) had 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Whorley besides points led in steals (7) with 4 steals. Simmons had 3 rebounds, 2 assist, 2 steals and 1 deflection. Roper had 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 deflection. Embry had 2 rebounds and 2 assist. Williams had 1 rebound, 1 steal and 1 deflection.
