ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Great American Conference announced the league’s Players of the Week for the opening week of the 2016 men’s soccer season. Ouachita Baptist University teammates, Gideon Onguti and Nelson Pacheco, earned the Defender and Goalkeeper honors, respectively, while Oklahoma Baptist’s Vicente Castillo took home the Offensive award. {{more:Read more …}}
Onguti led the Tiger defense to a pair of shutout victories. In a 2-0 win against Southwest Baptist, the junior from Frisco, Texas helped limit the Bearcats to only five shots on goal. Against William Jewell, the Cardinals only mustered five shots on goal as the Tigers earned a 1-0 overtime triumph to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2010.
Pacheco opened his junior season by registering shutout victories against Southwest Baptist and William Jewell. He made five saves against the Bearcats and followed up with five more saves against the Cardinals. The junior from Kennedale, Texas earned the third GAC Goalkeeper of the Week award of his career.Note: Nelson graduated from Kennedale High School in 2013, playing on the Kennedale Wildcat Soccer team and earning district MVP honors two years in a row.
