39 years as a coach, 22 as head coach …Barrett, who has been at his profession for 39 years with the last 22 as head coach, has held two head coach position. The first one was with Godley, where he compiled a 36-27-1 record in six years and one district title. He then moved to Kennedale in 2001 and while at Kennedale, he has had 153 wins with just 45 losses. He also added another nine district titles (one was shared) to his list. He has had only one losing season in those 22 years as a head coach (Godley) and can claim two undefeated regular seasons both at Kennedale.It has to be mentioned that he grew up on the sidelines. His father, Harold Barrett, had 22 years in as head coach before retiring. The elder Barrett coached from east to west Texas before settling in at Weatherford, long since passing on the coaching mantle.
But, back to the Texas Football article that, as they put it, ?spotlights a few coaches who maybe don?t get the credit they deserve for the work they?ve done.? This article does highlight his duties as athletic director. However, we will add one last plug to his overall record that is not mention in the article. Region II: Richard Barrett, Kennedale
In his time at Kennedale, Richard Barrett has helped build the Wildcats into a state powerhouse not just in football, but in multiple other sports on both the boys and girls side. Barrett has also spearheaded multiple facility improvements on campus as the Wildcats athletes enjoy some facilities that are on par with some 6A programs. Under Barrett?s guidance and the Wing-T offense, Kennedale has made the playoffs sixteen straight years and in 2016 made their deepest run in school history before falling in the semifinals to Abilene Wylie.
The other coaches from 4A are Mickey Owens, Monahans (Reg I); Dwayne Dubois, Bridge City (Reg III); and, Tom Allen, Sinton (Reg IV).
