Two KHS students qualify for state bass tournament

Next week two Kennedale High School anglers will fishing the Texas High School Bass Association State Tournament on Lake Ray Roberts, May 20-21. {{more: CONTINUE …}}
 
Riley Bush and Justin Harper, members of the Kennedale High School Bass Club have earned the right to fish in the tournament that has as a top prize of a $20,000 scholarship.
 
This is the second year for Kennedale to send a team to the state tournament. The two year old KHS Bass Club is being advised by Biology and Outdoor Education teacher Danny Wilcox.

To qualify, the KHS team had to have finished in the top 50% in a regional tournament. There were two regional tournament. To qualify for the regional, a team has to be in the top 50% after fishing at least 3 regular tournaments in their division. There are four division in the state. Kennedale is in the West Division.
 
At the regional tournament this year, the team of Bush and Harper were in at #65 out of the 265 teams participating putting them in the top 25%.
 
During the year, they entered in four tournaments finishing out of the money in just one, Lake Texoma. In their other three tournament, they finished no lower than the top 20% – Lake Granbury #51 out of 271 (19%); Possum Kingdom Lake #35 out of 271 teams (13%); and, Lake Whitney #24 out of 255 teams (9%).

The competition at the state tournament will be stiff. There are 910 teams fishing those two days from all around the state. The weather should be perfect.

Mission statement: “It is the goal of the Texas High School Bass Association to provide a venue where high school students have the opportunity to compete in organized tournaments while establishing strict guide lines and academic standards that will allow our student anglers to excel in the class room and on the lake.”
 
Participation is open to student teams in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade providing that the 12th grade student does not turn 19 before September 1st of their senior year.
 
Each team will consist of one or two eligible contestants and one boat captain.
 
Boat captains can fish, but cannot contribute to the team?s creel. Student anglers must cast, reel and set their own hook. The boat captain can help cull fish, net fish and remove the hooks if needed. Boat captains are the ones permitted to drive boats for their teams. Students can assist in loading and unloading ONLY if they have a Boaters Safety Certification. To qualify as a boat captain, the person accompanying a team must be at least 19 years old and have not guided on the tournament waters in past 30 days.
