Wildcat Archery finishes rookie season in state top 10

Capping off their first competition year in archery, Kennedale High came in 7th place in the state at the NASP Texas State Scholarship Tournament held in Belton, Texas on Friday April 1. {{more:[read more]}}

  • #5 Georgetown – 3,235,

  • #7 Kennedale – 3,188,
  • #8 Troy – 3,187,
  • #9 Ennis – 3,173,
  • #10 Vandergrift – 3,170.
Teams came from all over Texas and from all classifications from 6A on down and including private schools. There were at 42 plus high schools that qualified for the state tournament.

This was the first year for Kennedale to field a team for archery. Kennedale was helped with the friendly competition provided by next door neighbor, the #1 team in the state, Arlington Martin. Kennedale actually won their first tournament event against Martin at the beginning of this year.

Other area teams that finished in the top 40 were #14 Arglye, #15 Arlington Martin Team 2, #20 Arlington High and #34 Joshua. In the high school division there were 717 students entered in the one day event (405 males, 312 females).

Team Sponsor/Coach Danny Wilcox (Biology and Outdoor Ed teacher) had set a team goal of 3200 for the top 12 shooter and at the meet they came in at a 3,192 score. For the overall team score Wilcox at one point was asking for a 3,187 score and the Kennedale team came in at 3,188.

?Very proud of every one of them!” Wilcox said. He added. “We entered as the number 16 seed and passed up Argyle and Ennis as two of the nine [to finish at #7]. Many of the kids established personal records and the school record was broken 3 times yesterday.?
 
Top finisher for the Wildcat team was Jacob Warren (Sr) with a score of 284 and an overall high school boys rank of 11. Warren set a new school record with his score. Sophomore Victor DeCluette came in 2nd at 280 points while freshman Hannah Stephens finished 5th at 265 points as the highest scoring female on the team. The top 12 scores on the team came from three females, one freshman, four sophomores, two juniors and five seniors.
