Wildcat Hoops keep district record clean but it takes overtime

Tuesday night the Kennedale Wildcat basketball team (15-12, 5-0) traveled north to take on the Springtown Pojos and escaped with 75-74 overtime win. {{more: continue …}}

For the Wildcats, it was their 5th straight district win in as many games. Current district standings have Kennedale in first followed by Benbrook (3-1), Castleberry (4-2), Lake Worth (3-2), Mineral Wells (1-4), Springtown (1-4) and Diamond Hill-Jarvis (0-4).

The WildCats, along with the Lady Kats, will take on Benbrook at home this Friday night. The girls? varsity will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday followed by the boys? varsity game is at 8:00 p.m. The Cats will be looking for a sweep of the first round of district play with a win over Benbrook.

Springtown ? Jan 16 (W 75-74 OT)

Springtown (11-11, 1-4) is a young team waiting for an upset win to make their mark in the district play. Tuesday they had their eyes on the visiting Wildcats and made the 1st place Cats scramble to keep their perfect record.

This was game that was not settled until the Wildcats took a 6 point lead late in overtime. It was a close game throughout. Kennedale could muster only a two point lead in the 1st and held a 4 point lead at half with a score of 33-29. Springtown came back to tie the game in the 3rd at 50 and then again at the end of regulation play 63-63. In overtime, Kennedale gain the lead in the final minute of the game and held on for 75-74 victory.

But it was hard fought, Kennedale had 3 players foul out during the game – Uniikye Washington, Bryce Hackett and Jaden Smith. Trey Poe ended the game with 4. Overall, Kennedale had 30 team fouls while Springtown ended with 25.

Coming up big for Kennedale was Bryce Hackett (Sr) with 20 points followed by Jaden Smith (Jr) 13, Uniikye Washington (Sr) with 12, Scott Whorley (So) 10 with 4 coming in overtime, Trey Poe (Jr) 6, Blake Taylor 6 with 4 in overtime, Nathan Otts (Sr) 4, Tai Davis (Sr) 4, and Jamal Downes (Jr) 2.

Lake Worth ? Jan 12 (W 65-56)

The game with the Lake Worth Bullfrogs (11-15, 3-2) was a close game but this was settled in the 4th when the Cats outscored the Frogs 20-13. In the first quarter, Lake Worth jumped out early on the Wildcats at 17-14. Kennedale came back in Q2 to take a two point lead into the locker room at half at 31 -29. It remain tight in the 3rd with the Cats retaining their 2 point lead at 45-43. It was the 4th that the Wildcats finally put their stamp on the game tto win at 65-56.

Top score for the game for Kennedale was Jaden Smith with 19 followed by Bryce Hackett with 18, Scott Whorley 11, Uniikye Washington 10, Blake Taylor 4 and Trey Poe with 3.

Diamond Hill-Jarvis – Jan 5 (W 96-43)

Thirteen Wildcats scored in this game that got away from Diamond Hill Jarvis early. After the first quarter, it was 26-14 in the Cats favor and 57-29 at half. In the 3rd Kennedale outscored the Eagles 27-4 to take a commanding 84-33 lead before winning 96-43.

Bryce Hackett led all scorers with 22 points in the game. Other Wildcats that scored were Uniikye Washington 15, Jaden Smith 14, Scott Whorley 12, Nathan Otts 7, Trey Poe 6, Versie Hodges (So) 6, Jamal Downes (Jr) 4, Robert Corbett (Sr) 3, Steven Jerrick (Sr) 2, Blake Taylor 2, Alex Hodges (Jr) 2 and Lane Hubenak (Sr) 1.
