Kennedale Rotary Club is getting ready to host its annual Four Way Test Speech Contest on February 11th, 2021.
So what is this anyway? Every Rotary Club meeting either ends or begins with the Four Way Test which is as follows: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? These principles were adopted by Rotary International in the 1940s as principles for its members to live by. We think they are not limited to Rotary but are applicable to every day life and are guiding principles which can be used by all human beings.
The Four Way Test Speech Contest asks high school students (public, private, home school) to take the Four Way Test, see how they could apply it to their lives and to make a 5 minute speech without only 3×5 notes and no props! This is an exciting time for our Rotary Club because we get to pass along these words of wisdom but additionally see how the students apply them. They are wonderful speakers!
We have Kennedale High School and Fellowship Academy Students competing every year and the top speaker as designated by our judges goes on to Regional and possibly Rotary District competition. The public speaking skill set is invaluable for students to develop.
Due to our current pandemic situation we are having a virtual contest this year. While this is not exactly the same, virtual speaking skills are becoming more and more important as businesses rely on these types of meetings for interviews, business meetings linking work units across major cities in the country, and even team meetings for employees are working from home.
Needless to say we think this year’s virtual speech competition will be beneficial to all concerned.
