It has been 10 years since we did our last nationwide census. In the intervening years, estimates have been made from that census to draw a picture of us or those who call Kennedale home.

What can we learn about who we are from the latest estimates?

The following is a short description followed by a more detailed account. Once the new census data for 2020 is tabulated it will be interesting to see how we have changed. The short version of who we are …

In summary, there is a lot of us per square mile but not as much as in the county. We are younger, wealthier, own our homes, and spend more time in the car going to work. Our families are larger than average. We are mostly white but with a large Hispanic population followed by African American/Black. We speak English at home for the most part. Just over 10% of us are foreign-born. Over 80% of us graduated from high school and we are approaching a third having a college degree or higher.

Some actual numbers (numbers from 2019 or 2014-18)

  • There are 8,645 people living in 6.61 square miles or 1,023.6 people per square mile. For Tarrant County, it is 2,094.7 people per square mile and across the US it is 87.4 per.
  • The average household is 2.93 people compared to 2.63 per in the nation.
  • 14.8% of the people in Kennedale are 65 and over while 26.1% are 18 years or younger.
  • In diversity, 63.6% (60%) are white alone while 5.6% (13.4%) are black or African American, 21.7 (18.5%) Hispanic, 6.7% (5.9%) Asian alone, 2.9% (2.8%) are two or more races, and less than 1% (1.5%) are American Indian/Pacific Islander. Note: Numbers in parentheses are national figures.
  • We travel an average of 30.2 minutes to work. Sixty-six percent of us are employed in civilian jobs with more women than men (58.7%).
  • Our average household annual income in 2018 was $75,000 compared to $60,000 for the United States.
  • Persons living in poverty are 6.1% compared to 12.1% for Tarrant and 10.5% for the nation.
  • Those citizens under 65 living in the city without health insurance accounted for 19.75% compared to 9.5% in the United States.
  • Approximately 5.2% under 65 are disabled.
  • Education-wise, 84% hold a high school diploma or higher while 28.2% have a college or higher degree. In 2018, 92.6% of us had a computer in the home and 87.1 had internet connection. This was higher than the national rate.
