About the Pirates …
La Vega is an independent school district in Waco but separate from Waco ISD. The Pirates have been a successful program over the years. Their first season was in 1931. They had a good winning run in the 1940s and several 10+ winning seasons scattered over the following years.
But, it was in the mid-2010s that La Vega showed their best. The Pirates won state titles in 2015 and 2018. For the period 2015 through 2019, La Vega went 71-6. They have continued with winning seasons since but they have high hopes for returning to another 10+ winning season.
Last year, the Pirates finished 7-5 and 2-2 in district play. La Vega was an area finalist in the playoffs. This year the team is reporting 25 returning players including 12 lettermen. In that number are 9 starters on offense and 7 on defense. The Pirates are coached by Don Hyde who is in his 7th year at the school.
