Citizens from Vera Lane petitioned the Council for help in correcting drainage problems; Commisioner Marti VanRavenswaay met with truckers concerning road conditions; 3 Lady Kat named to All-District Basketball teams with 2 more as Honorable Mention along with 2 Wildcats on the boys All-District Team; and, the KISD Growth Committee predicted and enrollment of 4,771 by 2012.?
  • April ? Kennedale Chamber awards went to Ed Farmer (KJHS Principal) as Educator of the Year, Sonora Fengolio as Citizen of the Year, and James ?Butch? Evans as Chamber Member of the Year; the ?Great Ball of Foil? made money for James Arthur Elementary; and, an early morning fire destroyed the Water Department Service center, damaging 5 city vehicles.
  • May ? A large group attended KISD Board meeting to express support for Coach Paul Basaldu; Bill Abbott was elected Mayor in record turnout along with Tom Boone and Ron Kovach on the Council; Ron Roudon and Dale Miller were elected to the KISD Board.
  • June ? 8 Wildcat baseball players were named to the All-District Team; and, the KISD Board and the City Council met to discuss matters of mutual interest.?
  • July ? KJHS received a Performance Gain Award along with $53,000 from TEA and receiving for the school were Superintendent G.D. Cockerham and KJHS Principal Ed Farmer; the Senior Citizen?s new van was formally dedicated; KISD awarded bid to Speed Fab-Crete for building a new Primary gym; and, local citizens tried to block a proposed landfill.
  • August ? KISD Board held public hearing on a proposed $8 million budget and then adopted the budget; and, the Board also adopted proposal that all school functions involving students be ?prayer free? on school attorney advice.
  • September ? KHS sophomores Daniel ?Bubba? Hodges and Gabriel Warren died in a car accident on Bowman Springs Road; School Board accepted the resignation of Daniel Ortiz as a trustee and approved a tax rate of $.53; the City awarded a contract for improvements to Vera Lane with residents on the street to pay 40% of the cost.
  • October ? the Chamber?s held their annual Kennedale Klassic Fun Run; Chamber speakers were State Senator Chris Harris and Representative Martin Frost; City granted Waste Management rights to use Dick Price Road in return for help in maintenance on the road; Jack Horton was selected to fill the unexpired term of Daniel Ortiz on the school board; and, a Kennedale resident was shot by someone trying to steal a car outside of his house.
  • ?November ? Veteran Day Honorees were recognized at a ceremony at Emerald Hills by the Kennedale Fine Arts League; Mayor Bill Abbott made a successful plea for food for the needy in the community; KISD VOCT students were elected to District offices and KISD band students won regional honors; and, the City awarded Waste Management a contract for solid waste disposal.?
  • December ? Handel?s Messiah was presented in combined community and KISD students production under the direction of KHS Music Director, Dana Seelye; Kennedale Chamber sponsored a toy drive that collected over 500 toys; 13 KHS football players were named to All-District team; and, TAAS scores for 3rd and 7th grade students showed marked improvement and were well above the state averages.?
