? ? ?Every city has its signature spring or summer event. For the City of Kennedale it is ART in the PARK. This is the fourth year for this event that is centered around the redevelopment of the heart of Kennedale. It started at Sonora Park but moved to its present location with the completion of TownCenter Park. The tree covered park is surrounded by a revitalized business district, the Kennedale Library, Police Department, City Hall and the Senior Citizen Center. Besides the usual kid play area it includes an amphitheater, landscaped walkway with a veterans memorial fountain and a unique 911 memorial. {{more}}
?? ? ?But the 3 day event is special in its own way. It is a convergence of several city goals ? promoting the arts, bringing the residents of Kennedale together in a fun, family-friendly activity using the parks and building a positive image of Kennedale as a ?can-do? small city. Art in the Park is billed as ?Visual art and live cultural entertainment both day and night featuring artists and vendors from the surrounding areas.? It is joint effort of the City of Kennedale, the Kennedale Chamber of Commerce, the Arts and Culture Foundation and Kennedale ISD. Part of its goal is to encourage young artist by awarding college scholarships to high school seniors. Last year?s scholarships went to Kennedale High School Seniors Alex Roper and Luke Ott with a second place awarded to Lance Heilig.?? ? ?This year the events and activities start at 4pm on Friday, April 5 and run through Sunday evening April 7. There are over 40 artists and vendors scheduled to set up displays of art for browsing and for sale. These artists will include local talent from the area schools and noted artists from the metroplex area. Not only will the visual arts be on display there will be bands, choirs and story-telling. The kick-off entertainment for Friday night will be a popular local band Blind Lemon?followed by Swan Song, a Led Zepppelin tribute band. Saturday starting at noon for the children will be Willy Welch, Tom McDermott (singer and story-teller) and Arthur Intermediate choir and they be followed by ?One Soul? for the teen group. Saturday evening will feature a returning performer, Sara Skinner, followed by?
Choate Country and Jamie Richards, both performing country music. Sunday will kick off at noon with schedule that will showcase both visual and performance starting with Carlo Shilinsky smooth jazz/rock, CATS (Arlington Theatre), Choirs from Kennedale Junior High and High School, DTA (Dance Performance), and ending with another local band ?Dooblin? (classic rock).?? ? ?All through each day will be opportunities for the kids to have fun with bounce houses (2), face-painting, playing in the park and many types of creative arts and crafts projects from animal masks, colored beads, popsicle sticks, sidewalk chalk drawing, colored hair spraying, modeling clay, funny ?spiders?, bird feeders and paper-mache balloons.?? ? ?For those who don?t have kids or family, it still just a way to listen to some good music, see good art and get outside in the spring weather. Bring family and/or friends and enjoy the day or evening. For a meal stop before, during or afterwards at Subway or Chicken Express locate at the site or journey up the road just two blocks to a Kennedale tradition, Burger Box, for an old fashion classic burger.
