Matthew Pyon, a senior at Kennedale High School, has been selected as a semifinalist in 59th annual National Merit scholarship program. Matthew had one of the highest scores in Texas.

About 1.5 million juniors at more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. {{more}}

About 16,000 students are semifinalists this year. The high school seniors can compete for about 8,000 National Merit Scholarships that are worth about $35 million, according to the corporation.

To be considered for an award, semifinalists must apply; have an outstanding high school academic record; and, earn a qualifying SAT scores.

Pyon is a 13 year senior, meaning that he has attended KISD school since kindergarten starting at Delaney Elementary. ?Matthew hopes to get accepted to Rice University or the University of Texas for next year.?He is an active member of the KHS fine arts program and can be seen every Friday night during football season marching with the Wildcat Band. Outside of school, Matthew volunteers at Plaza Medical Center in Ft. Worth.
