SAN ANGELO ? After one of the most prolific careers in Angelo State softball history, Morgan Spearman has been named the softball nominee for the 2014 Division II Woman Athlete of the Year announced by THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) presented by Honda. Spearman (Kennedale Class of 2010) is now one of 11 finalists for the prestigious {{more}}CWSA Collegiate Division II Women’s Athlete of the Year award. The announcement of the Woman Athlete of the Year will come at the end of June.
“It is an honor to be named a nominee for the DII Woman of the Year Award and I am very excited to be representing my school and team in this manner, ” stated Spearman. “I could not have done this without the help of my two coaches, Travis and Katie Scott. By receiving the nomination for the award, it makes all the hard work over the years well worth it. I couldn’t be more proud of my career and the opportunity to represent Angelo State.”
The senior was a first team NFCA All-American selection. The LSC Player of the Year, scored 80 runs this season breaking the ASU and LSC single season record. It is the fifth most runs scored in a single season in NCAA Division II history. The Kennedale native was second nationally with a .506 average breaking the ASU single season record. She recorded 83 hits, 19 doubles and 10 home runs. The senior led the NCAA with a .622 on-base percentage. Spearman is the first player in ASU softball history to hit for the cycle earlier this year.
She was named to the LSC All-Conference first team, the LSC All-Academic team and awarded a Gold Glove by the LSC. Spearman was also honored on the Capital One Academic All-American third team, becoming the fourth player in ASU softball history to be selected.
She finished her career as the ASU all-time leader in on-base percentage (.522), runs scored (222), walks (126) and highest fielding percentage (.995). Spearman is also in the top 10 on the ASU career list in slugging percentage (.640), games played (228), games started (223), at bats (661), hits (271), doubles (53), home runs (31), RBIs (162), total bases (162), stolen bases (48) and hit by pitches (34).
“What an honor to represent your sport for the Honda Award,” ASU head coach Travis Scott said. “Morgan is the perfect example of a student-athlete being the best they can on and off the field. She has represented Angelo State with nothing but class and will do the same as a Honda nominee.”
The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $2.8 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs at the institutions.
