Brian Johnson became the mayor of Kennedale in May succeeding John Clark who choose not to run for another term. Johnson is no novice, he knows of what he speaks in theory and in practice.
Johnson, who has been an citizen volunteer for the City of Kennedale for over fourteen years, teaches government at Tarrant County College. He has taught for TCC since 1991 where he currently has an “A” rating from his students who warn others that his essay questions are hard. {{more}}
After moving to Kennedale in the mid-1990’s, Johnson decided that he needed to get involved with the community. He served as an appointed member of the Planning and Zoning Commission from 1998 to 2005, and was the Chair from 2001 to 2005. Mr. Johnson was elected to City Council in 2005 and served as the Mayor Pro-Tem from 2012 to 2014.
He is also a active supporter of the city’s participation in governance at the regional and national levels. Johnson currently serves on the Tarrant Regional Transportation Council Executive Board and the National League of Cities Youth, Education, and Families Council. He has previously served on both the Texas Municipal League Legislative Committee and the National League of Cities Community and Economic Development Policy and Advocacy Committee. He believes that the City of Kennedale has and will benefit from these connections.
Johnson had this to say about his goals as mayor.
“We need to continue to pursue positive economic development and strive to stretch the value of every dollar. Our current partnerships with Tarrant County and other regional organizations are paramount to our success and allow us to maximize every dollar. In the coming years, the need to focus on implementing sustainable water and road infrastructure will be increasingly important, as will our need to communicate and have conversations with our residents. City Council values the opinion of every community member and we hope to employ new methods of interaction in the coming months. I am proud to represent our City as Mayor and look forward to meeting new challenges and finding new opportunities to make Kennedale a bright star in the DFW Metroplex.”The following is a student interview with Assistant Professor Brian Johnson made while he was a city council member in 2012.
