KHS finish in top 4 in UIL Lone Star Cup

The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A), based on their team performance in district and state championships. The competition is stiff for the title. {{more}}

 

Kennedale High School has had a top 4 finish in four of the last five years, finishing in 3rd place last year. This year Kennedale was tied for fourth place with Fredericksburg, each with 71 points. Argyle once again won the Cup with 127 point followed by Abilene Wylie (115) and Liberty Hill (90).

 

Standings include competition in Academics, State and Area Marching Band, Team Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Track & Field, One Act Play, Softball, Baseball

 

UIL states that “Honoring the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas, the UIL Lone Star Cup is open to all UIL participant high schools. All University Interscholastic League (UIL) member high schools in good academic and athletic eligibility standing are included. The UIL is based on the premise that students are students first, and participation in activities is a privilege.”

 

A review of the year shows that the KHS did very well across the board. Note: some of the following accomplishments were not used calculating the standing for the Cup.

• The Wildcat band program won its 5th straight trip to Austin with a #5 finish in the state UIL 4A Marching competitions, the highest finish in school history. The KHS Band also won their fifth consecutive UIL Sweepstakes Award, the highest award that can be earned by a band program in UIL. Twenty-five members made All-Regional, 21 qualified for state ensemble and solo contests and one earned a spot on the All-State Band.
• The first ever Kennedale High entry in the UIL State Young Filmmakers Festival in Austin was third in the state, winning a bronze for the fledging program.
• KHS won the district title in UIL Academics with 35 first through third place finishes. Seventeen members advanced to regional competition in Lubbock, the most ever sent by the high school. The computer science team went on to finished in 2nd place in state 4A competition with one team member finishing in the gold with first place in the state.
• Two choir members earned all-district and all?region honors, 13 advanced to state, earning 12 ?Superior? ratings at state competition.
• Individually one KHS student made the State Academic Team and was a National Merit Scholar Commended Student. Another was selected as the top 4A Freshman in the State Best of Texas Computer Science contest. Two earned a national Hispanic Student Recognition honors.

On the athletic side there were several firsts and a number of big finishes.

• The LadyKat Soccer program won the first ever 4A State Championship as well as the first state title for the KHS soccer program, sweeping through district play undefeated while also winning area and regional title. Honors included nineteen All-District selection, two All-State selections and All-Region Coach of the Year honors.
• The Wildcat Football program claimed its first undefeated regular season in school history with district, bi-district and area championships before losing out in the state semifinals. The Wildcats placed 8 on the 4A All-State Team, 4 on the State All-Academic Team and 21 all-district teams.
• The Lady Kats Volleyball claimed a district title, a top 25 finish and became an area qualifier. Nine were All-District selections and 12 earned All-District Academic honors.
• The Wildcats Basketball swept district play winning district, bi-district, area and quarterfinal championships with a 27-8 record and a final #13 state 4A rank. Ten Wildcats made All-District along with the coaching staff. Two were selected as All-Region and one was selected as All-State.
• The LadyKats Basketball team earned a district title as co-champs and a bi-district championship, ended the season with at 26-10, a #9 state rank, 8 All-District selections and Coach of the Year honors.
• The Lady Kats softball team finished at #5 in the Class 4A with a 23-4 record and titles in district, bi-district, area, quarterfinal and semifinals before losing in the regional finals. Eight made All-District along with the coaching staff, two made All-Region and one made All-State.
• The Wildcat baseball team finished at 14-10-1 and in second place in district, making the playoffs for the 20th year. Ten Wildcats made All-District.
• Cross-country for both boys and girls included a 2nd place finish in district and a berth in the Region 1 meet in Lubbock.
• The Wildcat track team finished 1st in district while the Lady Kats finished in second place. Both teams qualified for region and state track meets with the Wildcats finishing second and and the Lady Kats third in the Region 1 track meet.
• The boys powerlifting team won a third straight regional power lifting title. Both the girls and the boys sent two on to the state finals with one Wildcat winning gold.
• Competing as individuals while representing Kennedale, one athlete made his fourth straight trip to Austin for the state swim meet, winning a silver and a bronze medal this year. Another KHS athlete competing in wrestling made it to the regional meet after taking 3rd in district.
• And, Kennedale High School also earned the national Safe Sports School Award, one of just 296 across the nation.
