Emma Reed, a recent graduate of Kennedale High School, was awarded a full scholarship to attend Howard Payne University?s Guy D. Newman Honors Academy in Brownwood. Reed, the daughter of Philip and Regina Reed, will begin at HPU in the fall and major in family studies. {{more}}
The Guy D. Newman Honors Academy: The Program for Civic Leadership and Public Policy is designed for academically gifted students who aspire to leadership roles in a variety of careers. Students develop critical-thinking skills by analyzing current issues through the multidisciplinary Honors Academy major, which includes courses from the School of Humanities and the School of Business.
Reed said she loves that HPU is a Christ-centered, small university.
?I?ve always enjoyed being around others who encourage me to cultivate my relationship with Christ and HPU seems like the perfect place for that,? she said. ?After my interview for the Academy, I knew that this was the school for me because it was clear that I would be challenged in my studies and I could look forward to building relationships on campus.?
After graduation, Reed plans to pursue a career as a child life specialist.
Dr. Justin D. Murphy, Brand professor of history, dean of the School of Humanities and director of the Academy, said the Academy Admissions Committee was impressed with Reed?s application.
?Emma will be a great addition to the Academy program,? said Dr. Murphy. ?We look forward to her joining us in the fall.?
