The Kennedale Archery program, in its rookie season, is looking to qualify for the state archery championships in March. The first step is doing well in the Arlington ISD Invitational Archery Tournament scheduled for Friday. {{more}}
Arlington will host the event in their new archery range at 4215 Little Road, just a couple of miles from Kennedale High School. The Kennedale team will begin shooting at 6 p.m. (Wildcats) and at 7:30 p.m. (Lady Kats). The public is invited.

Kennedale will join teams from Arlington ISD (Bowie, Lamar, Sam Houston, Martin, Seguin), Irving MacArthur, Flower Mound Marcus, East Texas Christian Academy and DG Homeschool from Benton, LA.
This is a qualifying meet for the state tournament. Archery coach Danny Wilcox is bullish about the team?s chance of qualifying, saying in a tweet, ?? last year?s qualifying score was 2,400. We have been 2,700+ [in] all 3 tourneys [entered this year]!? He added in another tweet to the team, ?To all archery team members…relax and shoot Friday!?
Archery is not a recognized UIL sports yet but it is catching on in high schools in the area. At archery tournaments, schools send teams composed of 24 team members. Team scores are
determined by top 4 male, top 4 female, and then the next highest 4 scores from
either.

In the tournament this Friday, awards are being given to the top 3 teams, top 3 female archers and the top 3 male archers. Early in the year, Kennedale won its first ever tournament, edging out Martin HS who had finished in 10th place last year.
Archery is part of the Outdoor Education Program at Kennedale High School. In October, another part of the program, the KHS Bass Fishing Team competed and won a Texas High School Bass Tournament in October.

Wilcox, a KHS biology teacher, is also head of the outdoor education program at the school. Most of the funds for the programs have come from the grants and donations. Recently, the Willow Bend Hunt Club and Ralph Stow donated $3,000 to the program. The program just finished auctioned off a gun safe donated for a second year by the Winchester Safe Company. It raised $785 for the program.
