Downes contributes to tournament win for Tarleton State

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (December 18, 2015) ? Tarleton State University (6-4) used a big run to start the second half to fuel a 55-50 victory over Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this week’s D2SIDA East Regional poll, in non-conference women’s basketball action on day one of the 2015 South Point Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena tonight. {{more}}
 

Senior Morgan Ashmore (Spearman, Texas/Spearman) led Tarleton State with a game-high 13 points as she made 6-of-9 free-throws and all three shots from the field to go with four assists and three steals. Junior Travanti Downes (Kennedale, Texas/Kennedale) added eight points on 3-of-5 shooting with four rebounds and three steals, while classmate Bailey Wipff (Lubbock, Texas/Lubbock Coronado) contributed eight points, connecting on 2-of-4 three-pointers, with three rebounds and two assists. The TexAnns went on to lose to Montana State-Billings in the final game of the tournament, 74-62. Tarleton State will play next in Denton against Texas? Woman?s University on December 31 at 7 p.m.
 

Downes, who is a junior starter at Tarleton State

University, is a 2013 KHS graduate. She lettered four-years at Kennedale on a team that went to four straight regional championships, won three straight district championships and a regional championship when she was a senior. She was a first-team all-district selection as a sophomore, junior and senior and was a three-time all-region selection and back-to-back all-state honoree.

 
As a freshman at Tarleton, she played in 23 games on a team that reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. Last year, Downes played in 26 games and averaged 3.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. She was one of three TexAnns with double-figure blocks (10).
