LadyKats make Final Four with 4-0 win in region championship

Freshman {{t2:Eryka McIntyre: }} popped in two for Kennedale as the Kats won their second regional title in as many years with a 4-0 win over Abilene Wylie on Saturday at Wildcat Stadium in Kennedale. The LadyKats play in the state semifinals in Georgetown Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. against Kilgore (21-5-2, 8-0). {{more}}
 
It was actually {{t2:Allie Thornton: }} (Sr) who scored the winning goal eight minutes into the game. This is her 40th goal and her 11th game winning goal this season. McIntyre got the insurance goal at the 18:30 mark of the first half on a free-kick assist by Thornton. {{t2:Cara Hunt: }} (Jr) got the third goal at the 28:59 (her 19th this year) followed by McIntyre 13 minutes later.

McIntyre is second on the team in goals with 24 this season.

{{t2:Abby Olmos: }} (Sr) recorded two assist which gives her 19 for the year and is tied with Thornton for most assist. Olmos is also third in scoring with 23 goals.

{{t2:Sara Calzado: }} (Jr) got her 16th shutout of the season as Kennedale recorded #17.

Despite the score, Wylie made a game of it with more time in the Kennedale end of the field than most teams. But, with shots 30/40 yards out, they had trouble reaching the goal with the strong defensive play by Kennedale.

“All their weapons (are tough). They have a lot of players. You shut one down you have two others to deal with. You shut another one down then you have the other to deal with. I think overall we handled it pretty well,? said Wylie coach Manuel Cordova to Jonathan Marshall of the Abilene Reporter News. This was Wylie?s first time to play in a region final.
 
Kilgore vs Kennedale preview …

The Kilgore Lady Bulldogs went through the district schedule

unbeaten, and haven’t lost since falling to Athens in Athens, 4-3, on

February 2. In the playoffs they have defeated Gladewater 9-0, Liberty-Eylau

11-0, Mabank 2-1, Athens 7-0 and in the region final Community 3-2. They have recorded 13 shutouts.

Kilgore’s losses this season have come against 4A

Palestine 2-1, 5A Carrolton Creekview 1-0, 5A Hallsville 1-0, 6A Keller Central

5-1 and 4A Athens 4-3 with ties against 5A Lake Dallas 0-0 and 5A Forney

1-1. They have scored 128 goals and

allowed 26. The Lady Bulldogs have won

13 straight. Kilgore is ranked #12 in MaxPreps 4A and the Texas Girls Coaches Association

(TGCA) this week for the state playoffs has Kilgore listed as #4 behind Jasper.

Kilgore and Kennedale have had only two common opponents: Paris

which Kilgore won 3-0 and Kennedale defeated 5-0; and Marshall which Kilgore won 9-0 and Kennedale defeated 4-1.

17 game winning streak …

Kennedale (25-2, 8-0) enters the state championship playoffs as the defending champions on

a 17 game winning streak. They have

scored 156 goals and allowed only 14. Their two losses came against 6A

Arlington Martin 4-2 and 6A Midlothian 1-0.

Kennedale is currently ranked #1 in MaxPreps 4A and is listed at 29th

overall in Texas and nationwide at #188.

TGCA has the Kats at #2 behind Salado in 4A rankings.
