2nd KHS team this year to win the unique honor

Head Coach Jennifer Patterson proudly announced this week that the 2015-16 Kennedale Lady Kat Volleyball team earned a very special and unique honor that only 283 high schools across the nation won and approximately 17 Texas high schools – a national team academic award. {{more:Read more …}}

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced their annual team academic awards, noting that there were 757 teams from university, college and high school levels. The team as a whole had to maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Known Texas high schools (high schools were not listed by state) that also won the award included Bryan, Canyon, Copperas Cove, Cy-Falls, Cypress Ranch, Cypress Woods, Fredericksburg, Georgetown, Granbury, Kennedale, Maypearl, New Braunfels, Richardson, San Elizario, San Marcos, Trinity and Westlake.

The honor was not a total surprise because early this year the team earned All-District Academic honors when every member of the team earned a 90 average or above (3.0+). Three earned All-State Academic honors, Darby Smith, Kendall Vondra and Maggie Pyles, for grades 94 and above (3.4+).
Lady Kat team members included Seniors: Maggie Pyles, Darby Smith, Kylie Foster, Kendra Vondra; Juniors: Bethany Klinkenberg, Ranaja Taylor, Emma Riffe, Jodi Dixon, Jasmine Alli, Katie Miller; Sophomore: Raeley Crosley, Freshman: Grace Guadagnolo. The Lady Kats had a record of 30-14 overall and 10-0 district record.

The Lady Kats join the Wildcat baseball team with this unique honor. The Wildcats were notified early this month that they were one of just 140 high schools across the nation to win a team academic award.

“Congratulations to the coaches and institutions that won the 2016 AVCA Team Academic Award,? said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. “It is no accident that a volleyball coaches association recognizes academic excellence as a team, rather than an individual, achievement. Players influence each other, both in execution on the court and discipline in the classroom.?
The breakdown this year had Girls high school leading the way with the number of recipients of 260. The NCAA College Division I honored 132 women?s programs, wh, ile NCAA Division II reached a new record with a total of 119 honorees. NCAA Division III had the second-most honorees this year with a total of 140 schools, matching last year?s record number. There were 54 NAIA College teams honored, 3 NCCAA teams, 11 mens college teams and 23 boys high school teams.

In Texas, college teams honored included Abilene Christian, Baylor, Houston Baptist, Rice, Sam Houston State, North Texas, Texas San-Antonio, Angelo State, Lubbock Christian, St. Mary, A&M Commerce, Texas Woman?s, Concordia, UT Dallas and UT Tyler.
Way to go, Kennedale as both students and athletes!
