Earlier this week, a series of vehicle burglaries occurred in a Kennedale neighborhood. A variety of property was stolen ? including firearms, electronics, and cash ? {{more: READ MORE … }}from a total of 11 vehicles, each of which was left unlocked. No forced entry was required.
The Kennedale Police Department would like to offer a friendly reminder about the importance of appropriately securing your property. Often, the same thieves will target an area multiple times if they don?t find adequate security in place. In crime prevention, any action that makes a thief?s work more difficult is referred to as ?hardening the target?.
QUICK AND EASY TIPS FOR SECURINGVALUABLES AND PROPERTY:
- Always keep your doors and windows locked, even when you are home.
- Keep your garage door closed unless you are working in it. Thieves have been known to remove lawn equipment and other valuables from open garages while residents were distracted by other activities inside.
- Keep the area around your home well-lit and clear of any shrubbery that might provide a thief with a convenient hiding place from potential witnesses or passing officers.
- Mark all of your valuables with information specific to you, such as your address.
- Log all serial numbers, where available.
- Keep photos of valuables ? especially jewelry ? to provide to police should any of your property be taken.
- Please park all vehicles in the garage and pull the door down into a locked position.
- If you must leave your vehicle outside, lock it and take the keys with you, even during the day ? but especially overnight.
- Never leave valuables inside the passenger area of your vehicle. It is best to take them inside with you, but if that is not possible, please lock them in the trunk.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended with the keys in it or while running. It only takes a thief a moment to enter and drive away. This is especially true for public places like gas stations or convenience stores.
In the past decade, the City of Kennedale has seen a reduction in reported property crimes from a high of 327 in 2007 to less than half that, with just 158 last year. This was accomplished through police and residents working together to reduce situations that allow these offenses to occur.
