Practice begins early for the Marching Cats

It was 7:10 am on a Tuesday morning and members of the KHS band were pouring out the doors of the bandhall, headed to Wildcat stadium. It was 15 minutes before the rest of the student body had to be in their classroom for the beginning of the school day. {{more:Read more …}}
 

 
Ten minutes later with just a few stragglers left, the band was lined on the field to begin warmups. Temperature was 78 degrees but humidity was high and standing in the morning sun, it didn’t take long for beads of sweat to start trickling down faces.
 

For nearly 40 minutes, the band went through part of the show that they will be performing this year on the field at football games and in competition.

precise routine that they perform as a part of band?s show

The band will practice again that afternoon indoors then again the next day starting before school and returning for an evening practice on the field. This is the life that the 156 member band can expect for the next several months.
 
major commitment ?
 
Band is a major commitment. Seniors who have gone 4 years have logged hundreds of hours each year practicing, playing in pep rallies, marching at football games, competing in marching contest, not to mention all those long bus rides often coming in after midnight.
 
Despite the fact that this is a ?non-state year,? meaning the band will not be competing for a state title since state contests are scheduled every other year, there are 28 seniors who returned to provide the crucial leadership that keeps traditions alive.

new uniforms and a lot of freshman …
 
The band, which will be sporting new uniforms this year, keeps growing with a total this year of 156 members. And, boding well for the coming years, the band has one of the largest freshman classes that they have ever had with 53 ninth graders, making up a third of the band. The rookies reported for summer camp and kept coming back. Not one dropped out, despite the long hot days on the pavement. That is a first.
 
contests start end of September …

Next week they will

have their annual ice cream social and put on the first performance of the show

that they have been working on this past several weeks. Coming up September 30,

the band will perform in their first competition at the Mansfield Marching

Festival. That will followed in consecutive

Saturdays by the Springtown Festival, the Princeton Festival and finally the

UIL regional contest on October 21.

In between, will be their regular activities

of pep rallies and football games. They

will be at every game that Kennedale plays up to and including the state title

game if that happens.

annual huge garage sale takes place on September 16 at the Kennedale Performing

Arts Center on the campus of Kennedale High School.
