End of the season update …?
Kennedale, who had spent most of the season ranked in the top ten in Class 4A basketball
with one of the better won-loss record in the classification, ended their run
in the second round of the UIL playoffs against Dallas Carter, 62-54. For those in attendance, this was a game worthy
of a later playoff round. While the ending was crushing to Kennedale fans, it was the kind of game that you couldn’t be disappointed in the play on the court. The
Wildcats were able to claim an early lead that held up throughout most of the game.?Even as the seconds were ticking away, the Cats were still fighting.
?Strongest region in the state …?It turned
out that Kennedale played in the strongest region in the state, Region II. By season end, six of the top ten teams in the state came from this
region including #1 Wilmer Hutchins, #2 Oak Cliff Faith Family (Dallas), #6
Kennedale, #7 FTW Dunbar, #9 Dallas Carter and #10 Dallas Lincoln. In a different region, Kennedale likely would have been playing for a
regional title and a chance to make the final four.
Eliminated each other …??As it was, the 6 top teams in this region, slowly eliminated each other in the playoffs until there was just one left standing. Wilmer
Hutchins beat Dunbar and then ejected Lincoln meanwhile Dallas Carter kicked
out Kennedale but then lost to Oak Cliff Family. Finally, the two top teams from this region,
Wilmer Hutchins and Oak Cliff, faced off in the region finals.Oak Cliff
eliminated Wilmer-Hutchins 54-51 and went on to win the state 4A title two games later over
Liberty Hill out of Region 1.
?What will coach remember about this state ranked team besides their obvious skills and work ethic??
?“They had always been friends, but they forged themselves into a family,” said Head Coach Doug Groff. “Sometimes, when practice or the season is over, teams go their separate waysbut not this group.” He added, “They were just a fun group to be around and to coach.”?
