KENNEDALE — Gilbert “Gil” Smith, 92, was born in Houston to Gilbert and Ann Smith. He grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Northside High before joining the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942. He served his country in WWII. {{more:Read more…}}After the war he obtained his commercial pilots license and later worked at Convair (now Lockheed Martin) where he met Eleanor Koch. They married Dec. 11th, 1948. In 1956 he went to work for WFAA in Dallas. He retired in 1986.He and Eleanor enjoyed raising a large garden on their 5 acres in Kennedale. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, photography, and going out to lunch with old friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Ann Smith; sister, Gwendoline McMillan; and many friends.
Survivors: Wife, Eleanor Smith; sister, Gerry Booth and husband Craig; daughters, Kathy Toothaker and husband David, Pat Stancoff, Teresa Martin and husband Richard Schlesinger; 3 granddaughters; 3 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; and lots of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Memorials: donations can be made in honor of Gil to Wounded Warriors or Hospice Plus of Fort Worth.
