KHS Debate Coach, Danielle Hyde Basic requirements are a love of challenges; an interest in current events; a willingness to put in a ton of time studying and preparing; an ability to think and speak on the quick; and, not be easily intimidated?
The first results for the debate program have been positive. The team of David Fielder (12th Grade) and Bailey Torcoletti (11th Grade) entered the UIL District 9-4A Cross Examination (CX) Debate Tournament and earned 2nd place. The Cross Examination debate which Fielder and Torcoletti entered is the most demanding of the two formats used. Students are given a topic at the beginning of the semester. This year, the topic is ?Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States.?
Teams have to be able to answer both in the positive and in the negative. In other words they have to be able to debate both sides of the issue with equal authority and passion. Their responses, whether in the affirmative or the negative, have to well-thought out and workable solutions. Clarity and brevity are prized.?
