In a game delivered in two parts, the Kennedale Wildcats (8-0, 3-0) defeated the Castleberry Lions (0-8, 03) 69-6 at W.O. Barnes Field in River Oaks on Friday and Saturday. {{more}}
The game, which was defined in large part by the deluge of water that fell on the metroplex this weekend, was a messy affair. The game was stopped in the first quarter Friday night with lightning in the air only to be resumed on Saturday. Castleberry plays on natural turf and the field was puddled with pools of water and all too soon mud.
Other than Castleberry?s long scoring run on Friday night, most were short burst by the runners. More than one running back, on both sides, was slowed or slipped and fell for lack of traction. For Kennedale, who had over 500 yards for the night, the average carry was down a little to an 8.48 average.
Quardraiz Wadley for the Cats was the top rusher with 214 yards on 20 attempts for a 10.70 average per carry and 4 touchdowns. Not far behind was Dailyn Wells with 161 yards on 15 attempts for 10.73 yards per attempt and 3 touchdowns. The Cats quarterback Kaiser McGlothen had 10 carries for 58 yards and 1 touchdown but was also 2-3 in passing for 52 yards. For Castleberry the top rusher was Julian Gomez who had 5 attempts for 69 yards for a 13.8 yard average. (His positive yardage came off of a 73 yard touchdown run on the Friday night).
For Kennedale, it was a dominating performance. The Cats rolled up 510 yards of offense, 22 first downs and 10 touchdowns while limiting the Lions to 100 yards, 4 first downs and one touchdown. After the one long touchdown by the Lions on their second possession of the game, Castleberry never crossed the 50 yard line and only once did the Lions have more than a 4 play drive (including punts) and that one was just for 6 plays. Subtract the 73 yard run on Friday night the net yards gained the rest of the game was 27 yards.
Linebacker Barron Browning for Kennedale had a good game with one fumble recovery and two interceptions with one returned for a 22 yard touchdown.
Yet, it was a game where tempers flared and ever play was contested. Kennedale was flagged 8 times for 70 yards while Castleberry was flagged 5 times for 31 yards. On many plays, there was action away from the ball even after the whistle was blown. It has to be said that Castleberry, who has played some of the best teams in 4A (#1 Navasota, #4 Kennedale and Alvarado), never quit.
For Kennedale it was a preparation for next week?s showdown between the only undefeated teams in District 5-4A, Kennedale and Alvarado.
