Linda Carol (Metcalfe) Allen of Kennedale, TX passed from this world at the age of 69 on July 7, 2016 after a long battle with ALS. Services will be held on Tuesday, July 12th, at 11am. Polytechnic Methodist Church, 1310 Collard St, Ft. Worth, TX 76105 {{more:[Read Obituary]}}
She was born December 29, 1946 to Sherrell Willard and Margaret Elizabeth (Boteler) Metcalfe of Ft. Worth.
She attended Polytechnic High School in Ft. Worth and worked as a journalist and photographer for several newspapers including the Midlothian Mirror. In the 1980’s she established and, with her family, ran her own weekly newspaper, the Desoto Banner.
When her husband was diagnosed with ALS in 1996 they found there was a lack of support and resources for ALS patients in the DFW area. Not being one to accept things as they are, she founded the ALS Association North Texas Chapter, establishing research fundraising, support groups, and other programs to support ALS patients and their families. Later, she established a Helping Hands group in DFW which connected young volunteers with ALS patients to help with simple services such as lawn mowing, errands, and other household tasks patients can no longer perform. It was with great and improbably irony that she would eventually face this battle herself.
She is survived by son Christopher Allen and wife Jennifer of Shallowater TX, and daughters Gina Six of Waxahachie TX and Leah Allen of Kennedale TX
Seven grandchildren Connor, Devon, Megan, Brianna, Logan, Emily, and Savannah. Sisters Vicki Heyer and Husband Jeff of Ft. Worth TX, Kay Isbell of Lawrence KS, and brothers, Gary Metcalfe and wife Kathy of Denver CO. and Richard Metcalfe of Ft. Worth.
She also leaves behind a large family of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and all manner of “family as far as we’re concerned”.
Preceded in death by both of her parents and her Husband, Marshall Kent Allen (October 27, 2000).
Rarely an unkind word, and often a smile that brightened any room. She will be fondly remembered by the many she touched.
