There was a nice size crowd at Jet Teague Ballpark in Kennedale Tuesday night, not huge but for a weekday baseball game it was good. Yet, halfway through the game, people in twos or threes were still hurrying in from the parking lot. It seems the word has spread by calls or texts that the boys from Johnson County were getting beat.
At that time the score was 5-1 and the Kennedale Wildcats were winning over the state-ranked #10 Godley Wildcats in this District 10/4A showdown. Kennedale went on to win by that score, giving the visiting Godley Cats their second loss of the soon-to-be-over season.
Ryan Dembroski was the winning pitcher going the full game with 93 pitches and finishing strong according to Kennedale Head Coach Paul Trantham. Dembroski struck out three with eight hits, one run and no walks allowed.
Jaydon Spurlock for Godley came in as relief to cool down the Kennedale batters pitching five innings with nine strikeouts against two hits, one run, and one walk allowed.
The game as it turned out was won in the first two innings as the Kennedale Cats scored 4 runs in the first and one in the second powered by Hayden Swenson‘s 3-run homerun. Contributing to the cause with extra-base hits were Dylan Harrison with a double and Nevyn Johnson with a triple.
Friday night could be the decider …
Kennedale’s first place will be severely contested in the final game of this home-and-away series Friday night in Godley. Godley will not be giving out the keys to the city to the visitors.
Kennedale (6-1) sits atop the District 10-4A standings after losing their 1st place standing in an upset loss to Hillsboro last week. Maybe that game was the incentive the Cats needed for Tuesday, if so, it needs to carry over to Friday also. Godley is also 6-1 now and a win could give them the top seed going into the playoffs which will start soon.
Godley at 22-2, 6-1 after the Kennedale series, has one more home-and-away district series to play. This one is against Venus. Sitting in last place, a struggling Venus Bulldogs team (1-15, 0-7) poses no serious threat. Meanwhile, Kennedale’s last district home-and-away series is with 3rd place Life Waxahachie (13-10, 5-2) and is set for next week. Tuesday night, Life defeated Hillsboro (10-9, 3-4) by a score of 4-1 and will complete the series Friday night at home.
